Gunnison Public Lands

I welcome your input as part of a community conversation regarding the long term management of public lands in Gunnison County. I want to hear from the community and facilitate a legislative process that protects the beautiful landscapes of one of Colorado's treasures, while balancing the multiple uses of our public lands.

Gunnison County contains some of our state's finest mountains, including the iconic San Juan, Elk and West Elk Mountain ranges. These landscapes support hiking, biking, skiing, rafting, kayaking, fishing, hunting, and motorized recreation as vital components of a vibrant recreational economy. Colorado's state legislature has recognized Crested Butte as the Wildflower Capital of Colorado. The southern part of the county contains Blue Mesa Reservoir, the largest body of water in our state. Gunnison County is also home to some of the most beautiful ranches in the state, supporting a thriving agricultural and ranching community.

Please take a moment to share your thoughts about the future of public lands in Gunnison County. Wilderness designation is one tool that has been suggested to protect sensitive lands from development pressures. Do you think more wilderness in Gunnison County is appropriate? If so, what areas do you think should be designated? What other ideas do you have regarding the public lands in Gunnison County?

Upon hearing your feedback, my staff and I plan to develop draft maps to further this conversation. Down the line, I hope a broadly-supported public proposal suitable for legislation can emerge.
