About Kentucky's 3rd Congressional District

Louisville is an old river city, founded as a transportation hub, attracting people and jobs dependent on the city's central location.  From the river and railroad, to ground and air transport, Louisville continues to serve as an important center for commerce and travel.

The city center has been undergoing a revitalization for the past ten years, with new housing attracting the traditional urban base as well as empty-nesters.  The overall population (Louisville-Jefferson County Metro) of about 700,000 is growing more diverse, with a recent influx in the last twenty years of Latinos, Asians, and eastern Europeans.

Louisville's largest industries reflect on its transportation tradition, among them UPS, Ford Motor Company, and General Electric.  The Norton Healthcare and Jewish Hospital complexes also rank among Louisville's largest employers.  The 3rd District is the proud home of several colleges and universities, including the University of Louisville, which is developing a reputation as one of the nation's top research institutions.

Louisville may be best known as the hometown of Muhammad Ali and Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby has taken place on the first Saturday in May since 1875.
