Washington, D.C. – Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-San Jose) released the following statement today after voting against H.R. 6156, the Russia and Moldova Jackson-Vanik Repeal and Sergei Magnitsky Rule of Law Accountability Act of 2012:
"I support trade relations with Russia, but I voted against this bill because a broad measure was added to the bill at a late stage which could freeze people's assets without due process, without any court review, simply by adding a name to a list. While I want to see permanent normal trade status, I think more consideration was needed to ensure this expanded bill does not violate the due process rights guaranteed by our Constitution."
