High School Students

Welcome, students! This page is designed to provide high school-aged residents of Georgia’s Second Congressional District with information about programs and services that Congress and the federal government have provided to assist you in your education and as you begin to prepare for college.

Financial Aid

I am committed to making higher education accessible and affordable. Please visit my Frequently Asked Questions page for more information about the college financial aid process and the federal government’s resources to help you plan for college.

You can also view the CRS Guide to Financial Aid, which guides students through the process of locating and applying for financial aid. This report was prepared by the Congressional Research Service for Members of Congress.

Congressional Art Competition

“An Artistic Discovery” is the annual art contest conducted by Members of Congress for high school students across the country. Students submit original works of art and the winning piece from each Congressional district goes on display as part of a year-long national exhibition in the Cannon Tunnel, an underground walkway to the Capitol from the House office buildings. The Congressional Art Competition has become increasingly popular among high school students in Georgia and across the country, and I am pleased to be a part of it each year and to help encourage young artists, promote art education, and give recognition to the outstanding work that our schools are doing to enable young people to realize their potential.

Guidelines for the competition are as follows:

  • Only high school students in grades 9-12 at a Second Congressional District school may enter the art competition.
  • Artwork must fall into one of the following categories: painting, drawing, collage, print, mixed media, computer generated art or photography.
  • The following guidelines apply to all submitted artwork:
    • All submissions must be 2-dimensional;
    • Artwork can be no larger than 28x28 inches, including the frame;
    • Artwork can be no larger than 4 inches in depth.
  • All artwork must be protected by a frame. Metal frames with glass or Plexiglas recommended.
  • Each entry must be original in concept, design and execution; no violation of US copyright laws. Pictures reproduced from existing photos, paintings graphics or advertisements will not be accepted.
  • Artwork must be submitted for the entire year. Artwork cannot be removed early for any reason.

The competition usually begins in February and winners are announced in the spring.

Congressional Page Program

On August 31, 2011, the U.S. House of Representatives’ Page Program ended and is no longer accepting applications. Although the U.S. House of Representatives’ Page Program has been terminated, the U.S. Senate Page Program will continue. Students interested in serving as a Senate Page should contact their Senator’s office for more information.

Senate Page duties consist primarily of delivery of correspondence and legislative material within the Congressional complex. Other duties include preparing the chamber for Senate sessions, and carrying bills and amendments to the desk. Pages also attend classes in the early morning at the United States Senate Page School. The Page School is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.
