Biography

Congressman Steve Chabot has proudly served Ohio's First Congressional District for 15 years. A lifelong Cincinnatian, Congressman Chabot has previously served as a Cincinnati City Councilman and Hamilton County Commissioner for four years on each prior to being elected to Congress in 1994.

Congressman Chabot continues to serve on the Committee on the Judiciary, the Committee on Small Business and the Committee on Foreign Affairs (formerly the Committee on International Relations). He was named to the role of Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Middle East and South Asia in 2011.

Congressman Chabot is one of Congress' leading advocates for fiscal responsibility, voting consistently to eliminate wasteful spending and reduce the excessive tax burden on hard-working Americans. Nonpartisan taxpayer advocacy groups such as Citizens Against Government Waste, the Concord Coalition and the National Taxpayers Union have time and again rated Chabot as one of the most pro-taxpayer members of Congress.

Congressman Chabot also served as one of 12 House Managers during the Senate impeachment trial of President Bill Clinton in January 1999, where he received praise for his even-handed and thoughtful approach to the trial. Congressman Chabot has helped lead efforts to block taxation of the Internet, pass product liability reform measures and toughen anti-drug laws. He is also an outspoken defender of the rights of the unborn, most importantly having authored the ban on the practice of partial-birth abortions.

Congressman Chabot is a 1973 graduate of LaSalle High School. He went on to earn his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary, and then returned to Cincinnati to teach at St. Joseph's School in the West End while studying at Northern Kentucky University’s Salmon P. Chase College of Law in the evening. Congressman Chabot has been active in the community, having taught political science at the University of Cincinnati and chairing the Boy Scouts of Cincinnati.

Congressman Chabot and his wife Donna live in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Westwood and have two children, Erica and Randy.
