2011 Congressional Art Competition - "An Artistic Discovery"

Important Dates and Submission Information

ALL ENTRIES MUST BE A PATRIOTIC THEME (No other entries will be accepted)

The competition is open to high school students only. Artwork must be two-dimensional. Each piece can be no larger than 28” x 28” x 4”, including the frame. Artwork cannot weigh more than 15 lbs. Accepted media as follows: Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.; drawings: pastels, colored pencil, pencil, charcoal, ink, markers; collage; prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints; mixed media: use of more than two medias such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.; computer-generated art; and photograph.

Each entry must be original in concept, design and execution and may not violate any U.S. copyright laws. Any entry that has been copied from an existing photo (other than the student’s own), painting, graphic, advertisement, or any other work produced by another person is a violation of the competition rule and will not be accepted. Work entered must be in the original medium (that is, not a scanned reproduction of a painting or drawing). Artwork will hang in the Capitol for the entire year of the exhibition and cannot be returned to the students earlier. Students should, therefore, submit artwork they will not need for other purposes. Artwork must adhere to the policy of the House Office Building Commission. In accordance with this policy, exhibits depicting subjects of contemporary political controversy or a sensationalistic or gruesome nature are not allowed.

Entry “Intent” Application Date: Friday, April 8, 2011

Artwork entry “intent” information should be sent to my Director of Community Relations, Mrs. Pam Gillespie, no later than Friday, April 8. Teachers or home school students should complete and submit an Exhibit Inventory form (attached) to Pam Gillespie at pam.gillespie@mail.house.gov or by fax at 321-639-8595. You can obtain a form by contacting Pam Gillespie at 321-632-1776 or toll free at 1-888-681-1776. Students who submit an “entry intent application” before April 8, will receive a formal invitation with complete details for artwork submission and an agenda for the Congressional Art Show Exhibition in mid April.

Submission Date: Saturday, April 30, 2011 – 9:00 -10:00am

Student’s entry piece must be present at the Exhibition at the Osceola Center for the Arts, 2411 E. Irlo Bronson Highway, Kissimmee, FL 34744-5430. Artwork entries will be accepted the morning of the Exhibition between 9:00 and 10:00am. No exceptions or extensions will be made, so please prepare to submit your work on time! Entries must be accompanied by your completed “Student Information and Release Form and Label Form.” Remember to have your parent/guardian and your art teacher sign a release form. Artwork must be ready to hang.

Congressional Art Show Exhibition: Saturday, April 30, 2011 – 11:00am-1:00pm

The event is free and open to the public. Student artwork will be set up, displayed and judged at the Osceola Center for the Arts the day of the Congressional Art Show Exhibition. We invite all students, families, teachers and the general public to view this celebration of the great artistic talent of our local high school students. There will be hors d’oeuvres during the exhibition, followed by a short program beginning at 11:30am, culminating in the announcement of the winner of An Artistic Discovery.

Exhibition Opening in Washington D.C. – mid June (date not finalized yet)

Each year there is an event for the unveiling of the student artwork from all across the nation. The winning student will be invited to this forum and to visit Congressman Posey in Washington, D.C. (Travel will be provided to the winner from each Congressional District)
