Internships

Internships in Congressman Smith's Washington, D.C. and District offices offer students an outstanding opportunity to learn about the legislative process firsthand while working side by side with experienced full-time staff.  Read below for more information.

On a typical day, Washington interns are responsible for attending hearings, assisting in legislative research and welcoming constituents to the Capitol. District interns assist staff in research and gain valuable experience aiding in constituent outreach. Full and part-time positions are available throughout the year to students currently enrolled in college.

Washington, D.C. Office:

In Washington, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for only college students. Although all internships in all offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students' hectic course schedules, but generally hours are 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when not in session.

In Washington, interns' responsibilities will vary.  They will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation, attend hearings and briefings, and welcome constituents to the Capitol.  As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

Nebraska Offices:

In district offices, interns may be asked to do a variety of things, including office work such as answering phones, writing letters and assisting with media clips. In addition, interns may assist in various constituent casework or outreach.
