From historical Bedford and world-famous Salem to crescent-shaped beaches and miles of rugged scenic coastline, Massachusetts' Sixth District has much to offer its residents and visitors alike. The Sixth District is filled with important and notable geographic and historical landmarks, educational activities and natural attractions that all add to the area's rich heritage and pride.
Just a short drive or train ride northeast from Boston, the Sixth District offers a different side of Massachusetts that can be fully appreciated away from the hustle and bustle of city streets. With the help of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority's (MBTA) commuter rail, your journey into history and nature is made easy.
Massachusetts' Sixth District is comprised of thirty-six cities and towns, each unique in their own way, adding to the character of the region. Covering most of northeastern Massachusetts, the Sixth District includes cities and towns stretching to the south as far as Saugus, Lynn, and Wakefield; northward to Salisbury, Merrimac, and Newburyport; west to Bedford, Burlington, and North Andover, and eastward to Rockport, Marblehead, and Nahant. The Sixth Congressional District is one of the more compact districts where communities are contiguous and are bounded by New Hampshire and the ocean thus making it one of the more natural geographic areas in the state. Our communities of interest have thrived, our families have worked together to strengthen our schools and main streets, our population has grown, and we have supported our neighbors and small business owners.
The region is a delight for food-lovers with famous Essex and Ipswich clams and the fresh catch landed daily at some of our nation's oldest fishing ports. History buffs will be swept back in time upon viewing the first U.S. battle flag flown during the Revolutionary War, a Puritan-era iron works facility, and the transformation experienced by a shoe-making community when turn-of-the-century technology met with maritime accessibility. Art-history admirers will marvel at A.M. Willard's famous "The Spirit of 76" as well as the nation's oldest working art colony and visitors of any stripe will be delighted to find the unexpected sides of Salem's rich history.
With more than half a million people, the Sixth District continues to be a vibrant, family-oriented community. Our hardworking communities are home to industries as diverse as green chemistry and commercial fishing. Congressman Tierney takes great pride in knowing that members of the community care for the well-being of fellow citizens, with more than one in five workers employed in education, health and social services, according to the most recent available data. In addition, the Sixth District continues its proud manufacturing tradition to this day, with nearly 50,000 manufacturing jobs.
