  1. It is outrageous that the House GOP has blocked a vote on fisheries disaster relief. My amendment would have increased assistance and provided critical support for our struggling fishermen. Helping the fishing community should not be a partisan issue. It is a shame that House Republicans made it one.

    • I would like to know what the state is doing with the gas tax money it receives now. Is it going to transportation and the road infrastructure or into the general fund.

I realized last night that I was an organ donor, so I wanted to see if local organizations would take my organs because there are many restrictions placed on gay and bisexual men. Carefully reading I found that I am barred from giving blood, I am barred from giving tissue if I have had sex with a man within 5 years of donation, but I am freely able to give an organ. Blood and tissue are regulated heavily by the FDA and organs are more strongly regulated by the department of health and human services (HHS). I feel that the FDA is infringing upon outdated stereotypes and fears that gay men are still a high risk factor for HIV/AIDS, which is certainly not fully the case anymore. Meanwhile the HHS hierarchy has the common sense to know that people are in need of vital resources to live a ample life. This is 2013 we have so much more research on HIV and Aids, and to clearly discriminate against gay and bisexual men is unjust. I say this because anyone who has sex with a penis is a high risk for infection. And to see little rules baring women from any such donation, when they are just as much as a risk factor. All donations are sampled for traces of bacteria and viruses, making me think that something needs to change and this discrimination needs to stop. Again this is2013 and our country has faced and conquered many walls for equal protection for LGBTQIA citizens. We are in a time where gay marriage is legal in many states, and where we are protected in many states by federal law. So I ask a question, why can I not donate my blood if someone needs it? What if my child needs blood can I donate to him or her since I am a gay man? This issue should not be a what if issue whatsoever I am writing this to you today because something needs to be done. I have made it my goal in life to help communities with health related issues, please stand with me on this to protect all posterity.

So this is pretty cool! Congressman Tierney came to our offices a while back to offer his insight on the responsibilities involved with being a member of Congress to help us with an educational game we were developing . Boston.com just published an article I wrote about our development process. It was a great opportunity to thank Congressman Tierney since when he was here the game had not yet been announced so we couldn't talk about it. http://www.boston.com/business/innovation/blogs/inside-the-hive/2013/01/09/was-teenage-congressman/FsOPUT1L4jH09sF0HdyN2H/blog.html

    • Your automated response to my email to you on gun control, while appreciated, failed to come close to my sentiment. I recently joined the NRA despite having reservations because they are one of a few organizations fighting for gun rights, and I hate that I felt pushed to that. Banning so called "assault rifles" is not making people safer, they are used in something like 1% of homicides, over six times more people are killed by fists and same with knives. Gun control activists want them banned to set the precedent for banning classes of guns, so eventually most if not all guns can be banned. They are targeted for banning because they are "scary looking" guns that make people afraid and gun control activists use that fear to get sentiment on their side to get them banned. When I am asked why a person might need a gun that fires more than 10 bullets or an assault rifle, how about the situation where there is a Katrina style disaster or riots like the LA riots and a person must potentially fend off a mob? These are real world situations that have happened in the US. They are also wonderfully versatile, able to be used for hunting with a limited capacity magazine, used for target shooting and useful for competition shooting. Take the same assault rifle, put a 5 round magazine in it and it can easily be used for sportsman purposes. I do believe in common sense precautions, but implementing a law in a knee jerk fashion as a result of emotion over one incident is not how I expect congressmen to behave. I'm fine with reasonable precautions like background checks at gun shows, but banning assault rifles is truly just a step towards trying to ban other classes of guns. It's a slippery slope, the same as banning certain classes of abortions may lead to banning all abortions in the future.

  3. Congratulations to the city of Salem, Mayor Kim Driscoll, and the National Guard! President Obama signed my bill designating Salem as the birthplace of the National Guard into law. We will be have a formal ceremony next week but wanted to help get this great news out.

  5. I and other members of the MA delegation are pressing the GOP to include funds for our local fisheries in the upcoming Sandy relief bill. My amendment would bring $150 million to suffering fishermen in states, like Massachusetts, that the Dept. of Commerce declared a fisheries disaster in 2012. http://1.usa.gov/URSrIu
  6. This week I posted a survey asking what your priorities are for the 113th Congress. If you haven’t yet voiced your opinion, please take this opportunity to share your thoughts below. Also, feel free to “share” the survey with your friends and family.
  7. MA is one of 29 states reporting high instances of the flu. The best way to protect yourself and your family is to get vaccinated. Visit http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine/index.htm for more information on the flu vaccine.

  9. Proud to be sworn-in as a Member of the 113th Congress today. I am committed to pressing for more common sense action on the critical issues facing our country: creating jobs, lowering the deficit, cutting spending responsibly, gun control reform, and so much more. I will also be posting a survey in the coming days to learn more about your ideas and priorities for this Congress, and I look forward to hearing from you.
  10. President Obama and the Senate came to an agreement on a deal to prevent the country from going over the fiscal cliff. It was the only bill brought to the House floor for a vote and it is imperfect. However, this legislation is a first step and it will ensure that millions of middle-class Americans and small businesses will not have the largest tax increase in the history of our country. Meanwhi...le, millionaires and billionaires will pay their fair share to reduce the deficit through a combination of permanent tax rate increases and reduced benefits.

This legislation provides greater economic certainty for families and businesses and will help our economy grow. It extends key tax credits including the Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Tax Credit and the American Opportunity Tax Credit, which helps families pay for college. It also extends tax credits for businesses such as renewable energy incentives and includes dairy policies to prevent a spike in milk prices. For seniors on Medicare, it ensures they can continue to receive care from their doctors and it assists those individuals who are most in need by extending unemployment insurance for one year. This bi-partisan agreement stopped the country from truly going over the cliff and allows us to continue to invest in education, clean energy and manufacturing that creates jobs and strengthens the middle class as we address our ongoing fiscal challenges.

  11. The Vice President spent 90 minutes with the Democratic Caucus discussing the proposed compromise that passed the Senate with 89 votes. However, at least as of now, it is unclear if the Republican Conference can get a consensus and act. We understand Speaker Boehner told his members he was not taking any position on the proposal! The American people deserve a straight up or down vote on the bill that passed the Senate, not endless amendments and failure to reach a conclusion. Now is the opportunity for the House Republicans to show they can compromise, put politics aside, and do what’s in the best interest of the country.
  12. It is unacceptable that a deal that does right by middle class families wasn't reached by tonight's deadline. Work must continue to reach a common sense agreement, and I will keep pressing for one.
  13. As we continue to work to avoid the Fiscal Cliff, I thought you might find Paul Krugman article in the New York Times interesting.
