  1. Yesterday the President spent an hour lecturing about "paying our bills." Well, one great way to ensure you can always pay your bills is to never charge up more than you can afford.

That's why today I introduced an amendment to the U.S. Co...nstitution that would require Congress to balance the budget every year, finally forcing the federal government to live within its means.

Hardworking, taxpaying Americans balance their family budgets every month. But, for the past four years, they’ve watched the federal government over-spend by more than $1 trillion annually.

We’re $16 trillion in debt. It’s past time Congress and the President were Constitutionally required to balance the budget.

Ms. Roby, I opened my paycheck and discovered a significant decrease in take home pay, due to the tax increases approved by Barack Obama and the United States Congress. Congress has an out-of-control spending problem. The American people should not be forced to enable this problem by paying more in taxes. When will our elected leaders truly compromise with a drastic cut in federal spending?

  4. Business is booming for the Hyundai plant in Montgomery. A few months ago, Hyundai added a third shift to help accommodate their demand and in turn added jobs for hundreds of Alabamians.

The success of this plant, as well as the other au...tomobile plants in Alabama, is a testament to the hard work our state leaders have put in to make Alabama a great place to do business. From our right-to-work status to our pro-growth tax policies and affordable energy prices, Alabama’s economy is certainly on the move.See More
  5. Saying “goodbye for now” to members of the 908th Airlift Wing as they depart for a four-month deployment to Southwest Asia. These men and women sacrifice so much for our country, as do their families. Please join me in wishing them a successful mission and a safe return home to Alabama.

  6. Looks like the President is running late on submitting his budget to Congress. Of course, that might not even matter since the Senate hasn’t passed a budget in almost four years.

I don’t understand the casual way some seem to deal with the... budgeting process, one of the fundamental responsibilities of governing. The government must live within its means. That's why the House has passed a budget that finally begins to restrain federal spending and reduce the deficit. The borrow-and-spend mentality many of our friends on the other side seem to have will only exacerbate our fiscal problems and lead us to become more like Greece. It doesn’t have to be that way. It’s time for fiscal sanity in Washington.See More
  7. Joining the Matt Murphy radio show here in a few minutes to talk about the latest fiscal issues facing Congress. You can listen online at the link below.
  8. Congrats to the University of Alabama Crimson Tide, back-to-back BCS National Champs! What a performance! Roll Tide!!
  9. Is everybody excited about the National Championship game tonight? Two great teams, but Alabama is going to win, right? #RollTide
  10. Congratulations to Austin Golson, an offensive tackle from Prattville High School, for being selected to take part in the 2013 U.S. Army All-American Game. The game is tomorrow, January 5th, at 2:00 PM CST and will be televised on NBC. I hope you’ll join me in cheering on one of our own from Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District!
  11. Just heard that Dothan Mayor Mike Schmitz and his son, Michael, just got back from Africa where they climbed Mount Kilimanjaro! What an accomplishment! Congrats, gentlemen!
  12. I’m grateful for the distinct honor of representing the people of Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District. We have our work cut out for us in the 113th Congress. From the budget deficit and our growing debt to this continued economic slump, our country faces some serious challenges. I’m committed to working to address these issues and to ensure Alabama’s commonsense, conservative values always have a voice in Washington.

  13. Tonight I voted against the Senate/Biden tax deal. Here's why:

For months I have been hopeful Congress could agree on a reasonable plan to reduce the deficit and finally begin to address our national debt. I have repeatedly stressed that a... truly balanced plan must include cuts to mandatory government spending. Unfortunately, the deal forged by the Senate and the Vice President does not contain real spending cuts, and I cannot support it.

I ran for Congress campaigning on the need to get government spending under control. A last-minute deal that raises taxes without cutting spending goes against my core beliefs and against the conservative values of Alabama’s Second Congressional District. Alabamians didn’t send me to Washington to raise their taxes so the President can spend more of their hard-earned dollars. They sent me to get control of spending so we can ensure America’s promise for the next generation.

Washington doesn’t have a taxing problem; it has a spending problem. We have $16 trillion in debt. We spend more than a trillion dollars more than we take in every year. It’s past time we get serious about this country’s spending problem and restore fiscal sanity to the budget.

  14. Headed back to meet with fellow GOP House members. Earlier today many of us expressed disappointment with the plan passed by the Senate. What’s wrong with the Senate/Biden plan? It doesn’t cut spending. In fact, it adds more to the deficit. Really.
  15. Such a true reminder of why we’re here in Congress today. Our country has more than $16 trillion in debt, which will be passed to the next generation if nothing is done about it.

We’ve been trying to find common ground for the last severa...l months. We’ve talked about tax reform, but only when the other side is willing to talk about spending cuts. The latest offer from Democrats raises taxes by the tune of $600 billion – not to reduce the deficit and not to pay off the debt – but to use for more government spending. That’s not compromise.

The real answer to our debt problem is to (1) make smart reforms to the big entitlement programs that are driving the debt and (2) create an environment for sustained economic growth. Raising taxes doesn’t do either.

We can’t spend any more. It’s downright offensive to tell the American taxpayer, “we spent all your money, and now we need you to pay more taxes so the government can turn around and spend some more.”

The House passed two bills to avert the so-called “fiscal cliff”: one to keep tax rates low for all Americans and another to replace harmful “sequester” military cuts with targeted, reasonable spending reductions. Now it’s time for the Senate to act, and hopefully they will before the day is done.

  16. Look who came with Mom to work today! I’m now headed over to the Capitol for votes and more meetings. The House Republican Conference meets late tonight when we'll hopefully learn whether or not the Senate will take action on a plan to avert the "fiscal cliff."

  17. The House will reconvene Sunday ready to consider a Senate "fiscal cliff" prevention plan, but first they have to pass one...

The House has already passed two bills that would prevent the "fiscal cliff" crisis: one bill to keep tax rates ...low for all Americans and another to replace the harmful "sequester" cuts with reasonable, targeted reductions. It's now time for the Senate to participate. Grandstanding on the Senate floor and ducking responsibility won’t do anybody any good.See More
