Wicker Urges VA Secretary to Address Issues for Mississippi Veterans

Secretary Shinseki sends team to Jackson VA Medical Center

Thursday, September 23, 2010

WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) met with Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki on Wednesday to discuss reforms needed to improve services for Mississippi veterans.

“We need to keep our promises to those who served America honorably in the Armed Services,” said Wicker, a member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee.  “I appreciate Secretary Shinseki’s commitment to send a team to Jackson to help us address the problems impacting the quality of care for our veterans.”

In the meeting, Wicker urged Secretary Shinseki to review the disability compensation process at the VA Regional Office in Jackson, and expressed concern about recent reports regarding the VA Medical Center.  In response, the Secretary said he was sending a team to the medical center to review recent complaints.  Wicker said he would continue to monitor developments at the VA facilities in Mississippi.

Wicker became the first senator from Mississippi to serve on the Veterans Affairs Committee in 2008.
