David Vitter, United States Senator, Louisiana

Program Overview:

Senator Vitter's internship program provides a comprehensive view of the practices and procedures of a United States Senate office and the workings of the Senate and how the legislative process works.  When possible, we will match your assignments to your interests.  Interns will assist Senator Vitter's staff in legislative and constituent duties.  Individuals must be able writers and have good communications skills. Interns will assist in the day-to-day clerical and administrative tasks within the office such as directing mail, giving constituents tours of the Capitol, running errands, answering phones, and assisting staff with research projects.

The office environment is professional, and dress is business attire.  It can become hectic at times but kindness, maturity, and warmness is expected at all times in your demeanor. This is the expectation throughout the entire office.  No matter if you are in the front office, welcoming guests or in another section of the office you must maintain a professional disposition.  Please note that intern conduct outside of the office is also representative of Senator Vitter, and your actions outside of the office command the same demeanor as inside the office

Remember the intern experience is not only the day-to-day office environment, but the entire congressional experience.  Interns are encouraged to attend hearings that Senator Vitter serves on as well as any other interests provided your work in the office is completed.  Many seminars and lecture series are held on the Hill sponsored by the Senate Rules Committee.

Qualifications:
Interns must be 18 years of age and have completed one year of undergraduate school.  Although it is not a requirement for applicants to be residents of Louisiana or to attend a Louisiana institution of higher education, preference will be given to those with ties to Louisiana.  Interns must complete an internship application, along with a one page essay.
