Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging, held a hearing on Feb. 28 to examine the dental crisis in the United States. More than 47 million people live in places where it is difficult to access dental care. More than 130 million Americans do not have dental insurance. About 17 million low-income children do not see a dentist each year. One quarter of U.S. adults ages 65 or older have lost all of their teeth. Only 45 percent of Americans age 2 and older saw a dental provider in the past 12 months.

At a time when the U.S. Postal Service is considering deep cuts in services and jobs, an internal watchdog told Sen. Bernie Sanders on Monday that a big funding cushion already has been built into the mail service's retirement and health benefit funds. Billions of dollars owed to the funds have been cited by Postal Service managers as a main reason that it must cut 220,000 jobs and close 3,700 post offices and 252 mail processing plants - half of all the current sorting centers.

In the midst of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, millions of American seniors have seen a decline in their standard of living and are struggling to survive. Unemployment among older workers doubled since 2007 while household incomes fell and medical costs rose, according to a report released Tuesday at a Senate hearing chaired by Sen. Bernie Sanders. The hearing on the recession and older Americans by the Subcommittee on Primary Health and Aging was held one day before the Social Security Administration is scheduled to announce whether more than 50 million retirees will receive a cost-of-living adjustment for the first time in three years. Senator Sanders addressed a crowd of over three hundred people on the statehouse lawn in Montpelier. They were gathered to celebrate Moving Planet Day - a day to "move the world beyond fossil fuels and toward a clean energy future." Vermont must, the Senator noted, continue to lead our nation, and the world, as we transition to energy efficiency and sustainable energy. The Montpelier event was one of over 2000 such gatherings that took place in 175 countries on September 24th, 2011.
09/22/2011 - Solar Decathlon
Senator Bernie Sanders meets with students from Middlebury College who are part of the school’s Solar Decathlon team, at an international competition sponsored by the Department of Energy to see which university team can build the best and most cost-effective solar-powered home. The Middlebury team’s entry is modeled on a classic New England farm house, and features enough solar energy to meet all of its needs. The home will return to Middlebury after the competition and will be featured as student housing and provide educational value for students interested in sustainability.
