YONKERS TEACHER TO PARTICIPATE IN HOUSE FELLOWS PROGRAM

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Eliot Engel congratulated Yonkers teacher Latasha Jones, who has been selected to participate in the House Fellows Program. This is an initiative of the Office of the Historian of the House of Representatives, designed to bring together secondary education teachers of American History and Government. The program takes place from June 22-26 in Washington, and is a week-long workshop on the history and practice of the House.

“The House Fellows Program is a terrific way for teachers to obtain a crash course in how the House of Representatives works. As a result, their students will have a better understanding of how their government works on a daily basis and how their representatives are serving their interests in Washington. In addition, Ms. Jones will spend some time with my Washington staff to see what it is like working for Congress. The whole experience is priceless and the students back in Yonkers will be able to share in her experiences as a result,” said Rep. Engel.

The goals of the House Fellows Program include the development of curricular materials on the House of Representatives to use in the schools. Each fellow prepares a lesson plan on the congressional topic of their choosing. These plans become part of a teaching resource database on the House. The Office of the Historian plans to invite a teacher from every congressional district over the next five years.

Ms. Jones is a Special Education Teacher at the Biondi Education Center in Yonkers and a graduate of Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry.
