REP. ENGEL ON AUGUST LABOR FIGURES

Washington, DC -- Congressman Eliot Engel said that while the private sector added 67,000 jobs in August there was a net job loss because of the loss of temporary census jobs.

“I consider the glass half full,” Rep. Engel said. “This is the eighth consecutive month where we have seen job gains for workers. The percentage of unemployed went up, because more people who had stopped looking, are now optimistic enough in the economy to resume looking.

“We still have a ways to go before we can get ourselves out of the Bush Recession. Too many families are suffering this Labor Day. Democrats enacted tax cuts for 95 percent of working Americans, plus eight small-business tax cuts, and job-creating investments nationwide.  And our efforts are moving us in the right direction.

“Our economy is showing signs of recovery, and our actions in Congress are helping to propel it. We cannot go back to the failed policies that got us into this predicament.”
