Sen. Brown Announces Nearly $15M for the Ohio Department of Education
Funds to Help Train Teachers and Incentivize Teaching Excellence
WASHINGTON D.C. - U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today announced that $14,798,273 was awarded to the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) to bolster teacher quality. These Recovery Act funds, awarded to ODE's Center for the Teaching Profession, supports competitive teacher compensation based on performance in high-need schools through the Ohio Teacher Incentive Fund.
"Quality teachers help to create quality schools. These resources will help to improve education by compensating outstanding teachers for their hard work," Brown said. "These critical Recovery Act funds will not only improve our education system for today's students, but also lay the groundwork to provide a world-class education to future Ohioans."
The Ohio Teacher Incentive Fund helps to create and sustain performance-based educator compensation systems. ODE is responsible for educating some 1,900,210 students in 614 public school districts throughout Ohio.
In July, Brown introduced legislation to promote student achievement. The DIPLOMA Act responds to research by arming local leaders to identify and address the barriers students face so they can meet rigorous standards in the classroom and reach their full potential.
