Tips for Writing Your Senator

There is a growing frustration with a number of people who feel that they don't really have an impact on their representatives in Congress. They feel discouraged and angry, and believe that far too many Members of Congress don't pay attention to their concerns.  Others feel Congress is too distant or hard to penetrate through a figurative wall between Washington, DC and the people. I cannot stress enough that nothing could be father from the truth! You can, and do, have an impact on Congress. However, it is possible increase your impact and influence in Washington, DC.

I always encourage people to think about their personal circles of influence. Think about your family, friends, classmates, co-workers and other people that you deal with in some part of your life that live outside of the state of Idaho. You might describe it as your Christmas card list. Open a constructive dialogue with them. Express your thoughts, ideas or concerns and encourage them to get involved and contact their representatives in Congress. Imagine the possibilities if everyone in Idaho were able to get just a couple of people from other states to contact their representatives. It would make a significant impression on Congress.

The reason why this is so important is because members of Congress do listen very carefully to what their constituency is telling them. If members of Congress are not originally in synch with a significant majority of their constituents on an issue, then they will change their position so they are in line with their constituents. It does make a difference when people get engaged!

I welcome the opportunity to hear from Idahoans on any issue and have set up multiple avenues to make that possible. I have seven offices established in Idaho along with my office in Washington, D.C. I have set up an email form on my website for people to email me. I have also created YouTube and Facebook accounts that provide a wonderful opportunity for people to get unfiltered information from me while also providing for people to give me feedback on the issues they are interested in. Also, for your friends outside of Idaho, here is an easy way to find the contact information of any member of Congress. If you are interested, I also have a section on my website that provides tips on writing your Congressman.

Don’t hesitate to reach out to your elected officials, local leaders and the people in your circle of influence. Contact as many people as you can and get them activated and involved in political expression. I encourage everybody to take advantage of every option afforded and use them to express ideas and opinions. Never doubt the impact you can have.
