PHILADELPHIA PA – Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA), the senior Democratic Appropriator for federal science agencies, today announced the award of $2,310,301 in grants for Philadelphia, including almost $1 million for the Franklin Institute to involve children from low-income households in science-based after-school programs, and nearly $1 million to help veterans re-enter civilian life.

The Franklin Institute grant, for $993,705, comes from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to the parkway science museum for a program titled, “Integrating Science into Afterschool: Engaging Underserved Populations in Science.” Fattah announced another NSF grant, for $339,984, to Drexel University, also in Fattah’s Second District, for a DNA detection project.

            The Congressman announced these grants from the U.S. Department of Labor for veterans who have been homeless or incarcerated:

• $676,612 to the Philadelphia Veterans Multi-Service and Education Center for the Homeless Veterans Reintegration Program, Incarcerated Veterans'         Transition Program, and the Homeless Females and Veterans with Families program.
• $300,000 to the Impact Services Corporation in Philadelphia for the Incarcerated Veterans' Transition Program.

Fattah is the senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and related agencies, which oversees spending by the National Science Foundation and other science agencies.
