- The Christmas season is a great time to reflect on the past year and look forward toward our hopes for the next. It’s a time to count our blessings and thank God for all He has bestowed upon us.
One of his most precious blessings is the f...reedom we enjoy here in the United States; the freedom to speak, to gather, to worship. That freedom is sometimes taken for granted, but it was paid for at a high cost. For generations, soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines have sacrificed to preserve and protect our freedom. This Christmas, let’s be mindful of the brave men and women of our military – many serving right now in harm’s way, spending the holidays away from their families. To those of you currently in the military or the national guard - to our veterans who have served – and to military families – thank you for your service to this country.
Christmas is also a time to remember those who are struggling through what has been a difficult year for our country. Many families have lost loved ones, some in extremely tragic circumstances. Many have lost jobs and are struggling to make ends meet in a tough economy.
This holiday season, please join me in praying for those who are hurting, and in doing our part to help and comfort our neighbors in need. A spirit of compassion has a power no government can match. Whether it is through donating your money to a worthy charity or just giving your time, we can all contribute to making this holiday season a little brighter for families who are struggling.
Not a day goes by that I am not aware of the distinct honor you have given me to represent you in Washington. There is a lot on our plate right now in Congress. We’re faced with decisions that will impact generations of Americans in a profound way.
Please rest assured that I go to work every day trying to do what’s in the best interest of Alabama’s Second District. If you have a concern or a particular need we can help you with, please contact me through the website or get in touch with one of my helpful staff members.
Thank you for the privilege of representing you in Congress. From my husband Riley, and our children Margaret and George, Merry Christmas! May God bless you and your family and may He continue to bless our great country.
-MarthaSee More - Yesterday, I was able to pay my respects to a great American hero, Senator Daniel Inouye, during a ceremony at the Capitol. Senator Inouye had represented the people of Hawaii since 1959. He served his nation valiantly during World War II where he lost his right arm in combat. I hope you will join me in saluting a great American.

Congrats to my friend, Tim Scott on being appointed as U.S. Senator! Tim distinguished himself early on as a leader, not only within our 2010 class, but the Congress as a whole. I sure hate to lose him from the House, but I know he’ll be an exceptional senator.Representative Martha Roby shared a link.
Flattered to be profiled as The Hill Newspaper's "Member of the Week" today. It's true that I never planned on being in Congress. Special people and interesting experiences from my youth helped shape my passion for public service, and I'm grateful they did. It just goes to prove the old adage, "We plan and God chuckles..."- Please pray for everybody affected by this awful shooting. Prayers for comfort for the families, peace and healing for Newtown, Connecticut.

Happy Birthday Alabama! On this day in 1819, Alabama was admitted to the Union and became the 22nd state.
Throughout our 183 year history, Alabamians have always held true to our state motto “Audemus jura nostra defendere” which means “We dare defend our rights.”
I hope you will join me today in celebrating “Alabama Day” - remembering our rich history and looking forward to an even more prosperous future.- [CHART] Our fiscal problems are fueled by spending levels that are too high, not by taxes that are too low.
This chart from the Speaker's Office illustrates that point by showing how President Obama's proposed tax hikes barely make a den...t in reducing the budget deficit and paying down our spending-driven debt.
Share this with your friends on facebook and spread the word. For those on Twitter, the "hashtag" is #spendingistheproblemSee More Representative Martha Roby shared a link.
I’m honored to be selected to serve on the conference committee which will hash out the details for this year’s National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). My inclusion on the committee is important for the Second Congressional District, ho...me of Ft. Rucker and Maxwell-Gunter AFB, because military plays such a key role in our district. You can rest assured that I will continue to advocate for our men and women in uniform, as well as for our military families while serving on the conference committee.
The NDAA is legislation that sets the priorities and policy for the Department of Defense. The conference committee is made up of members from both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Together, we will work together to pass a bill that compromises the House bill with the Senate bill passed earlier this year.See MoreRepresentative Martha Roby shared a link.
I wanted to make sure you saw Senator Jeff Sessions's op-ed that appeared in the Wall Street Journal today about the ongoing fiscal cliff negotiations. An excerpt is below:
"What we need is more distinction, not less. On these great issue...s of the economy and debt, the voters have sent Washington mixed signals and a divided Congress. It is thus all the more critical that the facts and choices be clarified."

Everybody likes to be home for the holidays, but I'm ready to work through Christmas to avert the "fiscal cliff" if that's what is necessary. This is a critical time in Washington for negotiations that will have real-world consequences for ...this country and for families in Alabama.
Did you know that nearly every taxpayer in Alabama’s 2nd District would see higher income taxes and less take home pay if the nation goes over the “fiscal cliff?" On average, American households would pay $3,500 more a year in taxes.
It doesn't have to be that way. The federal government’s huge annual deficits are fueled by spending that is too high, not by taxes that are too low.
I believe we can find common ground without compromising our principles, and I remain hopeful that a good agreement can be reached. I’m committed to working through the Christmas holiday if that’s what it takes to find a solution.
For more information on the "fiscal cliff" and how it impacts you, follow the link to my statement...See More- Thank you to the students at Dalraida Elementary School for the beautiful ornaments they made for our office Christmas tree!

It’s been 71 years since that day of “infamy,” when Pearl Harbor was attacked and the United States was thrust into WWII. Let’s never forget what happened that day, the lives lost and sacrifices made. May we always remember how that special... generation that rose up in defense of freedom and became the definition of American greatness.
It’s important that we honor the heroes from that “greatest generation,” and pass along their story to young people today. One amazing program that is doing both at the same time is the Honor Flight network, which provides WWII veterans trips to Washington D.C. to visit the WWII monument built in their honor. Please consider donating or volunteering with the Honor Flight network, and share this information with your friends. If you know of a WWII Veteran who has yet to take part in an honor flight, please contact the Honor Flight South Alabama team and let them know. Contact information can be found at the link below.
(FYI: some have asked our office about similar trips for Vietnam veterans, and my office has been informed that such trips are in the works.)

The Advertiser’s Mary Orndorff did a Sunday story on the possible consequences of the “fiscal cliff” in Alabama. This is what happens when the White House decides to put politics ahead of good policy. They insist on raising taxes despite th...e harmful effects it would have on small businesses and the economy as a whole.
This awful plan would blindly slash defense spending despite the incredibly negative impact it will have on our military. President Obama and the Democrats seem willing to drive this country off the ‘fiscal cliff’ and back into recession all to get the tax increases they so desperately want. More taxes alone will never fix our fiscal problems. The real problem is spending, and Americans want reasonable, responsible reforms that promote economic growth.See More- ActivityDecemberPeople Who Like This267
