Baca Praises Students for Excellent Academic Achievement

ONTARIO, CA– Last night, Congressman Joe Baca (D-Fontana) honored 67 students for stellar scholastic performance at his 5th Annual National Hispanic Heritage Month Outstanding Latino and Latina High School Student Recognition event at the Chaffey Joint Union High School District Hill Auditorium.

Parents, relatives, principals and counselors attended the ceremony to show support for the students, who attend over 30 public and private high schools in San Bernardino, Colton, Rialto, Fontana, Ontario, and Rancho Cucamonga.

Rep. Baca said he can relate to the struggles of many students who come from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds.

“Who would have imagined that a 10-year-old shoe shine boy who picked tomatoes and apricots, washed dishes, worked at a gas station and as a janitor is now a United States Congressman?” Rep. Baca said.  “I owe my success to the power of education, faith, and family.  If I can make it, so can you.”

Congressman Baca presented each of the high school seniors with certificates for their outstanding academic achievements, extracurricular activities, and community involvement. He also thanked the parents and family members for their sacrifices, and recognized the teachers, principals and counselors who recommended the students for the honor.

“We know you are very proud of your students – and we thank you for your dedication to making sure they succeed,” Rep. Baca said.

Congressman Baca reminded the students that his career in public service began in the education field when he became the first Latino elected to the Board of Trustees of the San Bernardino Community College District.

Since coming to Congress, Rep. Baca has consistently supported efforts to increase funding for education.  In the 112th Congress, he introduced legislation to mandate increased PE requirements, and to require 50 hours of nutrition education each year for all students.

Rep. Baca stressed that education is the key to a sound future that opens the doors of opportunity for everyone.

“My message to all of you today is to never stop believing in yourself,” Rep. Baca concluded.  “Si se puede!  Yes, you can do it!”
