December 10, 2012 - Did you know that December 17th is Wright Brothers Day? On December 17, 1903 Wilbur and Orville Wright successfully piloted the world's first powered flying machine in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. All successful airplanes since then have incorporated the basic design elements of the 1903 Wright Flyer.

October 19, 2012 - Every October national public service organizations collaborate to increase awareness of breast cancer, and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. Last year, New Jersey residents of the 13th Congressional District and beyond raised $200,000 for cancer prevention and diagnosis during a 5k community walk in Jersey City. I am proud to represent such an active and engaged community!

October 9, 2012 - Did you know that the United States Naval Academy was founded in October of 1845? The Academy, then known as the Naval School, opened on October 10th in Annapolis, MD with 50 midshipmen students and seven teachers. Today, the Naval Academy is home to roughly 4,500 students, all trained become powerful leaders of the U.S. Navy.

September 17, 2012 - Did you know that September 15 through October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month? September 15 marks independence day for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September 18.

This year there are lectures and events occurring in Washington DC to pay tribute to Hispanics who have greatly contributed to the United States. Special events will be held by the Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. August 1, 2012 -  Did you know that August is National Back to School Month? August is also nationally recognized as Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month and National Immunization Awareness Month.

This month get ready to go back to school by taking your child in for an eye exam. Be sure to contact your school regarding required immunization documents as well, and bring any school forms for your healthcare provider to fill out.

July 10, 2012 – Did you know that July is National Parks and Recreation Month? Our nation’s first national park, Yellowstone, was established in 1872 and extends through three states. Today, the United States boasts 394 national parks. For information about the parks in New Jersey and in Washington, DC visit the National Park Service website where you can search for parks by name, location or activity.
