Washington D.C.House Armed Services Committee Ranking Member, Congressman Adam Smith (WA-09) released the following statement in response to North Korea’s launch of a long-range rocket carrying a satellite:

“North Korea’s launch of a long-range missile with ballistic capabilities defies multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions and is a direct threat to our allies in the region. North Korea, and its new young leadership, must understand that continuing this pattern of irresponsible behavior will only further isolate the country.

“Moreover, the new regime in Pyongyang has an opportunity to reengage with the international community, abide by its obligations and chart a path towards a better future for the North Korean people. It is disappointing to see that Kim Jong-un has decided to use North Korea’s scarce resources to threaten regional stability.

“In the face of this belligerence, I am pleased to see that the United States, our allies in the region and the international community are committed to strongly condemning the launch and working in a concerted fashion to pursue appropriate actions through international institutions. It is my hope that China will join the chorus of condemnation and use its influence to reign in Kim Jong-un and prevent the regime from committing this sort of reckless act again.”
