In Meeting with Department of Energy, Brown to Press for Progress Report on Mound, Piketon Cleanup Efforts

Brown to Seek Assurances of Smooth Worker Transition, Maintenance of Funding for Piketon Cleanup; Will Call for Increased Resources to Complete Redevelopment at Mound

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In a meeting with a top Administration energy official, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) will press for a progress report on the cleanup projects at the Miamisburg Mound Site and the former Gaseous Diffusion Plant (GDP) in Piketon. Following this month’s roundtable with community leaders at Piketon, Brown will meet with David Huizenga, Acting Assistant Secretary for Environmental Management at the Department of Energy.

“Mound and Piketon sites were once economic anchors in their respective regions,” Brown said. “Ensuring that these projects receive necessary resources will position the sites to lead our state’s economic recovery—attracting businesses and creating jobs.”

Although the official cleanup of the Miamisburg site is complete, Brown will urge Huizenga to devote resources to finish incomplete roads and remove abandoned buildings to better attract new business to the site. Brown will also call for full funding in the President’s upcoming budget to complete Piketon cleanup and request an update to ensure that workers receive the benefits they have earned and deserve.
