Brown Welcomes Marine Week To Cleveland
Brown is a Member of the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs
CLEVELAND, OH—U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) released the following statement today welcoming Marine Week to Cleveland. Events will take place through Sunday, June 17th.
“Marine Week is a wonderful opportunity for Clevelanders and Ohioans all across our state to get a close and personal look at one of the great branches of our Armed Forces. For 236 years, members of the U.S. Marine Corps have fought bravely and honorably to protect all that we hold dear—our freedom, our liberty, and our safety and security,” Brown said. “That’s why it’s so important that we continue to provide our Marines, and all of our service members, with the support they need to do their job safely. I am proud to welcome the Marine Corps to Cleveland this week, and I invite all Ohioans to attend an event and learn more about the work that the Marines do here and across the globe.”
In February, Brown helped pass through the Senate Banking Committee an amendment that he supported that would provide restitution to the families of service members who were victims of a 1983 Iranian terrorist attack on a Marine Corps barracks in Beirut. In 2007, a federal judge ruled that Iran was liable for the attack, in which 220 Marines died, including 10 from Ohio. The families of these Marines were awarded $2.65 billion in damages; however, the money has not been distributed because the U.S. does not have the authority to seize Iranian assets held in U.S. banks. Brown supported an amendment that delivers on the promise made to these families by allowing plaintiffs who have received judgments against Iran for terrorist acts to collect restitution by accessing frozen Iranian assets.
Brown, a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, has convened field hearings around Ohio to examine how the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA) can better serve veterans across Ohio. He is the author of several legislative initiatives that would strengthen our nation's commitment to veterans by improving education reimbursements and expanding employment protection for former service members.
