Brown Receives Petitions From Ohio Seniors Asking To Keep Medicare And Social Security Out Of The Deficit Debate
Reynoldsburg Senior Will Call for the Preservation of Medicare and Social Security; Discuss How Cutting Programs Would Hurt Her Household Budget
WASHINGTON, D.C. –U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) joined a group of central Ohio seniors to stand against threats to cut Medicare and Social Security during the fiscal cliff budget negotiations. At a press conference in Hilliard today, Ohio seniors from the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare presented Brown with a petition signed by thousands of Ohio seniors asking leaders in Congress to keep Social Security and Medicare out of the deficit debate.
“We cannot afford to fix America’s fiscal crisis at the expense of retirees and middle-class families,” Brown said. “Medicare and Social Security are not entitlements—Ohio’s seniors have earned these benefits. They are investments that seniors paid into while they were working – and should be able to count on today when they need it most.”
Brown was joined by Regina Duffey, a Reynoldsburg-native who will discuss how changes to Medicare and Social Security will stretch her already-thin household budget.
Brown also outlined efforts to avoid a tax increase on middle-class families. With just 17 days for Congress to act, Brown renewed his call on the House of Representatives to act on the Senate-passed bill to extend tax cuts for 99 percent of Ohioans – preventing the median-income Ohio family from seeing their taxes increase by $2,200 next year – while reducing the deficit by $829 billion.
