    A post from a friend:

in light of his recent stance about "TALKING" about not taking our guns away...I give you this info that I wish someone would post on his page to enlighten his supporters:

He is trying to get ahead of the curve by pretending to be 'against gun control'...but he knows most people do not understand how the political game is played down there!

    PAY ATTENTION!!

if Begich votes... For Harry Reid's nuclear Option on January 22, it is the SAME as voting FOR gun control!

call Begich at (202) 224-3004 and DEMAND he vote NO on the Nuclear Option!!

current Senate rules require 67 votes - a two-thirds majority - to shut down debate and change the rules.
And it was designed this way for a reason.

The Senate was intended to be a place where legislation was slowed down.

It was supposed to be the place where amendments were offered, debate was encouraged, and all participated in a process that led to better laws.

But like a bully on the playground, Senator Reid doesn't give a flip about the rules.

And he believes he has the authority to flat-out ignore the Senate's parliamentary procedures, long-standing traditions and specific rules in his mad rush for more power.

In short, Senator Reid wants the Majority Party to have the unchecked ability to pass legislation with virtually little to no opposition.

Massive tax hikes. Out-of-control spending. GUN CONTROL, Big Labor power grabs. More attacks on our God-given liberties.

We're talking Harry Reid and Barack Obama having the power to pass anything they can dream up.

Just the thought of it sends shivers down my spine.
Of course, Harry Reid isn't stupid - he knows exactly what he's doing. He knows he's breaking Senate rules if he uses the "nuclear option."

In fact, back in 2005 Senator Reid correctly argued, "For people to suggest that you can break the rules to change the rules is Un-American."

The truth is, Senator Reid just doesn't care.

And he's willing to destroy the unique characteristics of the Senate simply to get his way.

    Charley Reese's Final column!

A very interesting column. COMPLETELY NEUTRAL.
Be sure to Read the Poem at the end..

Charley Reese's final column for the Orlando Sentinel... He has been a journalist for 49 years. He is retiring and this is HIS LAST COLUMN.
    ...
Be sure to read the Tax List at the end.

This is about as clear and easy to understand as it can be. The article below is completely neutral, neither anti-republican or democrat. Charlie Reese, a retired reporter for the Orlando Sentinel, has hit the nail directly on the head, defining clearly who it is that in the final analysis must assume responsibility for the judgments made that impact each one of us every day. It's a short but good read. Worth the time. Worth remembering!

    545 vs. 300,000,000 People
    -By Charlie Reese

Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.

Have you ever wondered, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, WHY do we have deficits?

Have you ever wondered, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, WHY do we have inflation and high taxes?

You and I don't propose a federal budget. The President does.

You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does.

You and I don't write the tax code, Congress does.

You and I don't set fiscal policy, Congress does.

You and I don't control monetary policy, the Federal Reserve Bank does.

One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one President, and nine Supreme Court justices equates to 545 human beings out of the 300 million are directly, legally, morally, and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.

I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered, but private, central bank.

I excluded all the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman, or a President to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it. No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislator's responsibility to determine how he votes.

Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party.

What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of a Speaker, who stood up and criticized the President for creating deficits.. ( The President can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it.)

The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating and approving appropriations and taxes. Who is the speaker of the House?( John Boehner. He is the leader of the majority party. He and fellow House members, not the President, can approve any budget they want. ) If the President vetoes it, they can pass it over his veto if they agree to. [The House has passed a budget but the Senate has not approved a budget in over three years. The President's proposed budgets have gotten almost unanimous rejections in the Senate in that time. ]

It seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts -- of incompetence and irresponsibility. I can't think of a single domestic problem that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise the power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist.

If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair.

If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red.

If the Army & Marines are in Iraq and Afghanistan it's because they want them in Iraq and Afghanistan ..

If they do not receive social security but are on an elite retirement plan not available to the people, it's because they want it that way.

There are no insoluble government problems.

Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take this power.
Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exists disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation," or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.

Those 545 people, and they alone, are responsible. They, and they alone, have the power.

They, and they alone, should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses. Provided the voters have the gumption to manage their own employees... We should vote all of them out of office and clean up their mess!

Charlie Reese is a former columnist of the Orlando Sentinel Newspaper.

What you do with this article now that you have read it... is up to you.
This might be funny if it weren't so true.
Be sure to read all the way to the end:

    Right Stuff
It’s extremely disappointing that more people – Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike – have not stood up against Barack Obama’s unilateral actions. The fact he is so willing to bypass Congress, disregard the Constitution, is nothing short of criminal and a clear abuse of power. Refusing transparency, limiting freedom of speech/opposition, attacking the Second Amendment…these ...are not minor legislative disputes, rather a calculated attack on our most staunch ideals. The President’s behavior – best defined by his quoted desire “to force his will upon Congress and the people” – goes far beyond partisan politics; it is a threat to our most basic values, our very way of life.

America was founded as a Constitutional Republic, one that detested big, intrusive government, not as a totalitarian regime that seeks to rewrite history and redefine God-given freedoms as it wishes. The Constitution – our most sacred document forged by men much more wise, learned, and patriotic than Barack Hussein Obama – is a limitation on government, not individual liberties. Yet, this monstrosity of a government has buried “We the People” in debt, endless regulations, and divisive propaganda through orchestrated media manipulation. If you still doubt the current state of affairs, ask yourself this simple question: if left unopposed in Congress and the Supreme Court, would this administration act in the best interests of the people – the timeless and intrinsic ideals of the Constitution – or would it systematically and unapologetically implement every derisive point of its progressive agenda? How soon people forget Nazi Germany and Communist Russia sought the exact, same goals.

America, or any country for that matter, doesn’t need a government or leader that tells the people, the very reason for its existence, what to eat, drink and do…one that even usurps the bread from the mouth of hard labor…it needs an administration that realizes its most absolute and unconditional objective is to protect the rights of the citizens it serves. Any other agenda is moot and inherently radical.

Mass killing have nothing to do with the type of gun ... magazine or even the ammo used! This isn't rocket science ... The common denominator here in these mass killings are ... Nutty people and they're attacking where victims can't defend themselves because of already stifling gun laws.
Get rid of one or both of the causes of mass killing and we will solve most if not all of our issues in this matter ... Keep the solution tied to the actual cause!

Thank you Senator for staying on target with what is really at the core of the latest shootings in CT - this country is pathetic when it comes to supporting and healing those people who suffer with mental illness. So many Americans suffer in silence with a health issue that people push under the rug, or publicly ridicule, because most people do not understand the illness. They just want these peop...le to "buck up and get over it". They don't expect cancer patients or people with diabetes to "get over it" - why do they think people with mental illness can just "get over it" without proper treatment and support. PLEASE continue to keep the conversation alive about bringing this issue out of the dark and finding help and support for our friends and neighbors who suffer from these horrible illnesses.See More

You have walked away from me when I wanted to talk about how we needed health care reform, you ignored our need for a bridge from Anch to our area in Knik. And now you defer comment on gun control, you are not for your constituents in Alaska. I will never vote for you again
  14. Many Alaskan's know the difference between a criminal with a gun and a law abiding citizen. The second Amendment was written for those who follow the law, not for the criminals amongst us. As for me the candidate who uses reason, logic and common sense rather than party dogma and the foggy myopia of emotionalism will get my support. The candidate supporting any ban or new barriers to law abidding, mentally healthy, citizens purchasing or selling fire arms will not receive my support or vote.

I understand that you will not support an assault weapons ban. If this is true, you lost my vote next time around.
  16. Dear Senator Begich,
Thanks very much for getting back to me personally—it's appreciated.
I do have to say that my wife and I are very disappointed with your response—or lack thereof—to the critical issues raised by New Town shootings. All the more so given the NRA's proposals for a totally armed America or the one in the news yesterday where an NRA board member in Arizona is trying to have guns... turned in to the police redistributed rather than destroyed. This is not the kind of country or culture we want America to be.
We voted for you because we felt that you could give good leadership on a range of issues that concern us. We think we know you well enough to believe that you personally understand just how serious gun violence is in America compared to other countries.
Just because Alaska is a state where legitimate gun use is necessary and extensive we expect leadership from our Congressional representatives on these issues. We support the 2nd Amendment as we do the 1st Amendment (and the rest of the Bill of Rights) but with rights come responsibilities.
One of those responsibilities is for you to be a leader on issues as serious as this. You do a disservice to the very critical issue of mental health services in the U.S. by using it as way to not discuss the real issues. We most sincerely do not want you to join that group of politicians who rather than leading forward are busy looking backward at the coverings of the hinder parts.
Having just seen the fine Lincoln film, I'm reminded why I so admire the man for combing true principled leadership on the most difficult and controversial issues with consummate political skills. A fine example.
We've received several emails requesting contributions in the last few weeks. We want to respond positively but that depends on having something positive to respond to. So many public figures are speaking out. Please let's hear from you.
    Sincerely, Tony Kaliss—Anchorage

  17. Dear Senator Begich,

I just watched a CBS News report filed by a correspondent named Major Garrett in which he reported on the White House’s intention to restrict gun ownership.

The report stated that the president wants Congress to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired in 2004 and extend criminal and mental health background checks to firearm sales at gun shows and through private deal...ers.

The report further states the White House is reviewing the effectiveness of gun buy-back programs, seeing if a federal buy-back program might work and that Biden also said the president might side-step Congress and seek to advance his agenda through executive order.

Vice President Biden stated, "I've been doing this a long time. I can't think of all the tragic events we've endured. I don't think anything has touched the heart of the American people so profoundly as seeing those and learning of those young children not only being shot but riddled with bullets.”

I am appalled by the audacity of this President and his administration. I hope that you are just as appalled by this rhetoric as I am. I am a law abiding gun owner. I own guns that the President is demonizing. My guns have never killed anyone and yet, my president is treating me as a criminal. You are my voice. I need you to let the country know that gun owners are not criminals and should not be treated as such. I am also appalled that the President is openly challenging the authority of congress. You should be enraged at the brashness of this President.

I spent 22 years in the United States Army and have worked as a civil servant since my discharge. I was trained by the United States Army to carry the very tool that the president wants to take away from me.

I have three issues for you to look into:

First, what does the president mean by “private dealers”? Is he implying that a private person who sells their property is a dealer? If so, will I be treated the same if I sell my truck? If not, why is it okay to treat me as a dealer for a gun but not for other property? I believe this is just another ploy to make it so difficult to own a gun that it becomes a de facto prohibition which violates my second amendment rights.

Second, please let me know how many criminals the president expects to turn in their guns? What are the potential savings that we, the people, will realize if the federal government spends hundreds of millions of dollars to buy guns from law abiding citizens? A cost benefit analysis must be performed and disclosed to the American people. In this time of fiscal constraint the President once again is proposing to spend a problem away. A federal gun buyback program is a waste of money. I would be willing to bet that the U.S. Government is not willing to pay market value for the guns it buys back. Businesses that take advantage of the citizenry during times of crisis are usually investigated. Any buyback program should be forced to pay market value and I don’t think that the federal government can afford that.

Third, when are you going to confront the Vice President regarding his use inflammatory verbiage to incite the American public into reacting emotionally in response to the Sandy Hook shooting? According to a 2010 report (2010 is the most recent year that I have been able to find complete statistics on) released by the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA), 32,885 people died as a result of traffic crashes. The report goes on to say that traffic crashes were the leading cause of death for children age 4 and ages 11-14 with a total of 1,210 children aged 14 and under dying. These numbers prove that over 90 Americans per day die in traffic accidents with more than 3 a day of those deaths being children under the age of 14. If the Vice president doesn’t think that anything has touched the heart of the American people so profoundly as seeing those and learning of those young children not only being shot but riddled with bullets, it’s because he hasn’t explained to the American people on national TV that over 23 children are mangled in car crashes every week. I believe this speech is intended to do one thing and one thing only, to usurp the authority of the U.S. Constitution and to, in effect, prohibit the ownership of Arms which are guaranteed by the Constitution.

I look forward to your quick response.

    Sincerely,
    Dan Gilson

Letter to the POTUS 29 DEC 2012 - I hope someone takes the time to read it.

    Mr. President,

Every facet of who I am compels me to write this letter to you. My name is Charles Clingensmith CPO USN Retired (2011), I am a veteran, patriot, husband of a Kindergarten teacher, father of two amazing little boys (3 & 8), and a student of Gunsmithing at Lassen Community College.

During my military caree...r I had many opportunities and experiences to work with amazing people, including serving at SEAL Team One as the Intel Chief for LT Matthew Flavin; recently the former White House Director of Veterans and Wounded Warrior Policy. I had the distinct pleasure of serving with Matt from late 2004 until he resigned his commission in 2007. In my 20 years in the Navy there has never been a better Naval Officer to serve under.

The purpose of writing you is a desire to open a dialogue regarding the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14th. I pray for the families of those lost that day and am fiercely proud of the teachers and administrators that stood up to the gunman. Never before in my life have I been so affected by a tragedy such as what happened that day. Just like many Americans I have witnessed my share of tragedy: My wife and I watched the events of September 11th 2001 unfold on television while stationed in Japan; while I deployed with SEAL Team Three in 2006 the command faced the loss of Marc Lee; I visited my friend Dan Cnossen at Bethesda Naval Medical Hospital after he lost his legs in Afghanistan, and on August 6th 2011 I mourned the loss of soldiers I had served with, Aaron (Chainsaw) Vaughn and JT Tumilson, while deployed with SEAL Team One in 2005 and 2007.

Sir, it is my hope that we, as Americans will actually have a comprehensive, thoughtful, common sense debate regarding gun control. To date, I am utterly disappointed by representation on both sides of this issue. One side would have us believe the other is attempting to take all guns and the slightest restriction leads down the road of complete denial of Constitutional rights. The other is trying to convince us that any and all guns are evil, the people who have guns are evil; if we ban all the bad guns then no one would get hurt or die. This type of logic from both sides is egregious especially when our elected officials (GOP and DEM) use ignorance to push an agenda. The outrage over Sandy Hook has propelled Politicians to scream for more gun regulations but I fail to see how banning guns is the answer. I agree 100% with the idea of closing loopholes and holding those accountable who break or skirt the law. Facts are facts, no matter how people spin them; you can’t get away from the math. There is a middle ground that both sides cannot seem to find and are unwilling to compromise in order to do so.

Why aren’t we addressing the issue that will have the most impact on these incidents, “What is the root cause of the dissolution of these individuals that it makes it OK to conduct atrocities like Sandy Hook?” But, if we are to focus on guns as the sole answer then lets admit that America is woefully negligent in finding a real solution to the problem and our children are still at risk.

As an intelligence analyst I always found it interesting that the general public made decisions with little in the way of facts. Emotions move people in one direction or another and I believe it is your administration’s responsibility to keep the conversation grounded in facts. Figures from the FBI, CDC and other agencies indicate the issue of gun violence is more complex than what is being reported via the news or on the web. There are so many different ways to interpret the data that I believe an outside, non-governmental or political, organization needs to look at the information; specifically, the organization that has been utilized extensively by SOF Commands in both Iraq and Afghanistan. I recommend utilizing the people from Palantir, as your administration did when investigating stimulus fraud in 2010. I firmly believe the people at Palantir can give you the most comprehensive look into the reality of gun violence.

As a father I find myself searching for the reasons why anyone would want to take the lives of innocent people in such a horrific manner and I want to contribute, somehow. At this time it seems that some are more focused on their political agenda vice determining how to prevent these types of attacks from occurring in the future. I would like to think that we as Americans would be able to set aside the hyperbole and truly focus on the issue at hand, taking care of our children. I consider myself a very pragmatic individual (I believe you are as well) and will let the facts guide my decision making process.

Thank you for your time and looking forward to your response.

    Very Respectfully,

    Charles Clingensmith CPO USN (RET)

  22. Is this true? Congress gets raises...better medical care and free college tuition for their kids while we get higher taxes and probably more gun control, limits on freedom of speech and our ability to assemble peacably?

Children of a congress member do not have to pay back their college student loans. How nice! Monday on Fox news they learned that the staffers of Congress family members are exempt from having to pay back student loans. This will get national attention if other news networks will broadcast it. Governors of 35 states have filed suit against the Federal Government for imposing unlawful burdens upon them. It only takes 38 (of the 50) States to convene a Constitutional Convention.
  23. Stay strong Senator. The right of the People to keep and bear arms is awfully important to Alaskans. How sad that many in the Democratic party have forgotten their oath. No bans. No compromises. No new laws on guns.
  24. I would like to encourage you to re-look at the Social Security's mandatory 5 month waiting period for the terminally ill. Let's not wait for it to happen to another Alaskan. The state of Michigan has recently passed a bill to correct this and this week the WY legislator... is hopefully going to do the same. My good friend Brian Moyer, in WY, had this happen to his wife. She had paid in over 30 years, got a terminal illness and died before she could receive any funds. This all at a time when she needed help most. Please help correct this over site before it happens to someone here in our state. Thanks.See More

Mark is it true that the military cuts begin with cutting breakfast and only providing two meals a day to our military members serving our country? Please say it isn't so...I want my daughter to be able to get three meals a day and snacks which she and all military members deserve each and every day. Please let me know! Thanks. Lorna
  26. Hi Mr Begich,
I am an active duty Public Health Service (PHS) officer from AK serving with the DoD and I just found out that PHS, NOAA and Cost Guard officers are excluded from access to Tricare's ECHO program benefits in a retiree status as described in the NDAA. I have 2 children with Autism and we depend on these services. Without them my children simply will go without educational therapies and behavior treatments that these children need especially as they grow.
Will you please support a House Amendment (HR 4310) that adds PHS, NOAA and CG officers back into NDAA? This will give my children access to these services after I retire in 4 years.
    Thanks
    CDR Susan Jordan

    Senator,
I want you to know that as a lifelong Alaskan and hunter, I support efforts to limit assault weapons and magazine sizes.
  29. i think you have already sold Alaska out to the highest bidder .
The oil company paid you the most money for your election bank , so you let them come on up to destroy the Arctic waters..
You can be bought and paid for , You are a rotten punk .
You are the last $@%#& we want to take the place of a hero.
The largest contributor to your election campaign was the oil company that is busy making the most awful attempt to drill that ever was recorded in history.

Senator Begich, thanks for your hard work. I just heard about the president wanting to do away with the 22nd Amendment. Please do not vote in favor of this. He has threatened that if it doesn't pass he will do an executive order to over ...turn it. If he does them he needs to be impeached. Thanks for your help!

Senator Begich, it would be great if you would make a comment on where you stand on the new Assault Weapons Ban.

Mark, you made the comment that you don't have a problem going head to head with the NRA.... You were elected by Alaskans which are very much supporters of the Second Amendment and the right to bear arms which isn't about hunting. It was our right to protect ourselves and family.
You seem to vote straight party lines so remember that Alaska isn't a Democrat strong hold and you're coming up for reelection. You won election because Stevens was framed by the Democrat machine, people here have a better memory than most States.... So vote for Alaska.
  34. GOOD morning mr begich these weapons are not only an american problem the whole world suffers at the end of a rifle and they are not all made in russia or china please take a close look at the home market of the usa and your exports and strart to cut your losses in human terms against your precious dollars in your precious bank accounts simple greed is the root of all evil fix that and you will become more than a mere president writing your memoirs and selling them for peanuts

Sir, I understand that there were 10 new bills introduced today to ban guns and magizines of verious types. We need you to stop all attempts to pass these bills. Taking away our guns and gun rights will not make anyone safer except the crinimals. All you have to do is look at all the places that have gun bans, like Chicago for example. I ask you to vote against an gun ban of any kind. Thank you for your time.

Hi Senator Begich and staff, I haven't heard anything from your office on the Presidential inauguration on whether my group was selected or not. I am assuming you have already made that selection. It would have nice to get an email whether yay or nay.

I am an Alaskan who typically works on the North Slope. While working up there I was amazed at the lack of Alaskans employed up there. I am looking for work and it seems like the majority of the jobs up there are given to out of state workers? What gives I thought that Alaska's oil production was meant to benefit Alaskans not out of staters. Just food for thought!! Happy New Year!

What are you doing in Washington? Why is pork put in the emergency help for the Sandy victims? Quit giving people free hand outs and help the victims that need it.

Thank you for answering my email about gun control and what really needs to happen. Sorry email was not put together better, but did it in a hurry. I agree that more needs to be done to help people mental problems and the gun laws alone will not keep people safe. It is a terrible tragedy of the things that have happen and that people that have lost there lives. You have my continued support to help fight these problems in the world.

    Senator Begich,
After months of watching both the administration and Congress seriously mislead and disappoint millions of Americans, I have no shortage of adjectives for how I feel. I am a lifelong Alaskan, taxpayer and proud American patriot. Considering this president's actions and those of his supporters, as an American, I am embarrassed. Our country's enemies cheer the direction our country i...s headed and this president appears intent on accommodating their happiness. By association, his supporters ignore the obvious and are just as culpable.
Thanks for mentioning on your website that now that tax increases are established, we can take a look at decreasing spending! I guess we'll stand by for that one.
