Senator Cantwell's Floor Speech On Coast Guard Authorization Bill

On December 13, 2012, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) delivered a floor speech on the Senate floor applauding Senate passage of the Coast Guard Authorization Act for Fiscal Years 2012 and 2013 (HR 2838), which passed the Senate on December 12 and is headed to President Obama for his signature.

The bill includes several amendments authored by Cantwell to protect Washington state's coastal economy and environment, and to maintain the nation's capability to deploy icebreaker vessels. The bill also includes Cantwell amendments to improve tsunami debris cleanup and force a risk assessment of tar sands supertankers in Washington waters.
