"Right Now... What Johnny is Doing"

In the Senate - This week, the Senate will resume consideration of a bill, S.3637, that would extend for two years the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s Transaction Account Guarantee (TAG) program, which provides unlimited deposit insurance coverage for non-interest-bearing transaction accounts.

On the Air – Johnny will be interviewed regarding the fiscal cliff on Tuesday, Dec. 11 at 2 p.m. on CNBC’s “Street Signs” with Maria Bartiromo and Brian Sullivan. Be sure to tune in!

Fiscal Cliff - In an interview on “The Daily Rundown with Chuck Todd” on MSNBC, Johnny suggested that the president wants us to go off the fiscal cliff, let tax cuts expire, cut defense spending and then come out and cut taxes on just a few later on. Johnny believes that it is time to sit down and get serious because if we don’t address the current fiscal cliff in this lame-duck session of Congress, we will put the nation in the same precarious position again. “I’m not in favor of patchwork solutions to a macro problem.” read his thoughts here

Chambliss, Isakson to Obama: Congress Will Not Cede Authority Over Debt Ceiling to White House
U.S. Sens. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), and Johnny Isakson (R-GA) joined their Senate colleagues in urging President Barack Obama to retract a White House proposal to change the procedure the federal government uses to raise the debt ceiling. The letter was written in response to a U.S. Department of Treasury suggestion to replace the current process — which requires Congress to vote to raise the debt ceiling — with a process in which Congress may “disapprove” of debt-ceiling increases but the president has the power to veto that bill and thus extend the government’s borrowing capacity as he wishes.

Wyden, Isakson Lead Bipartisan Letter Urging Morsi to Crack Down on Arms Smuggling into Gaza
Recognizing the role Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi played in brokering the Israeli-Palestinian cease-fire last month, 18 U.S. Senators from both sides of the aisle sent a letter to President Morsi urging him to step up efforts to stop arms smuggling through the Sinai and into Gaza that could reignite the conflict between Israel and Hamas. U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) and a bipartisan group of lawmakers urge President Morsi to allow the peace process to advance by cracking down on the smuggling of weapons through Egypt and into the hands of terrorists in Gaza. read the story

Isakson Urges Administration to Heed Fed Chairman’s Warning: Don’t Cripple Housing Recovery With ‘Overly Tight Lending Standards’
U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., today urged the administration to heed Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke’s warning this week that overly tight lending standards are a threat to our nation’s housing recovery. Over the past two years, Isakson has repeatedly called on the administration to revise its proposed rule that would prevent responsible homebuyers from obtaining Qualified Residential Mortgages (QRMs) by requiring a 20 percent down payment.
