On Monday July 16, 2012, U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) announced the first-ever federal safety standards for rail transit systems nationwide, including Metro. Senator Mikulski fought for the establishment of these safety standards. This new federal authority was included in the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century (MAP-21), bipartisan legislation which was signed into law by President Obama earlier this month.
