On Tuesday, June 5, 2012, Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) the Dean of the Senate women, spoke out on the Senate floor to urge the Senate to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act, legislation which will help close the wage gap between women and men working equivalent jobs, costing women and their families $434,000 over their careers.

    "a woman from Virginia claimed her supervisor told her that hiring a woman would be simply a liability: you're gonna get pregnant, you're gonna miss work,we don't know if we want you here (that's a whole other issue), and then she said, and 'we don't need to pay you that- you don't head up a household so why should you get the money for some guy who does head up a household'...
