On Monday, May 21, 2012, Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.), a senior member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee, spoke on the Senate floor to urge the Senate to reauthorize the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Safety & Innovation Act. The legislation includes the Prescription Drug User Fee Agreement (PDUFA), a public-private partnership that supports the FDA's drug review policy, reducing the time between the submission of a drug application and the FDA's ultimate decision. Since its passage in 1992, 1,500 new drugs have been approved by the FDA.
