Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) was honored by the Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN) for her leadership on anti-bullying legislation and her work on the Safe Schools Improvement Act. GLSEN holds this annual event ("Women Who GLSEN") to honor women who help push forward GLSEN's mission of achieving safe schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. The Safe Schools Improvement Act (H.R. 1648) would require states to include bullying and harassment data in their needs assessments and districts to include such data in their school safety plans. The Safe Schools Improvement Act would allow schools to use their existing funds to teach about bullying and harassment and engage in prevention programs.
