Dave speaks about an amendment he offered to protect our nation's seniors. The amendment is very simple, it says: don't eliminate Medicare and don't increase costs or reduce benefits for seniors.

Since neither one of us was "suffering", do you "still” think we should have gone to the government for money? Is there dignity in this? Why is it that I don't make the statement that "I grew up in poverty" and yet my old friend does? Does one do that to "pay" another for his vote to keep one’s self in office? With nearly identical histories, why does one person take money & the other does not? Can you help another permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves?

I think that it's important to have systems in place that support people in need. If the economic status to which you refer is one of need then I wouldn't see anything wrong with using government support to avoid suffering.

Thank you for your politeness. Are you saying, that two individuals that share very simlar social and economic status, that the "both" of them should have depended on the government for money to buy food?

PrairieMan100, I understand you have a personal experience and relationship with Dave. You are an asset to the discussion and I appreciate your response. So, are you saying that he didn't need government support to have enough to eat as he said?

whatseriously1, I'm thinking that as a child, who actually grew up with Dave in the same neighborhood, attended the SAME gradeschool, junior high school, high school, and Iowa State University as Political Science majors, that I am a bit more deserving of criticing Dave's public statements that he "grew up in poverty" Dave knows who I am and during those years, both of us "made do" with what we had. Back then, we didn't complain about what we didn't have. So then, why the change? I know why.

Rep Loebsack I support your efforts to protect Medicare and applaud your stand on this very important issue. We cannot allow those who want to cut federal spending to simply slash funding for this program. It would leave those who are least able to afford health care at the mercy of their family and God's grace to protect them. Thank you for your compassion and hard work.

Good for Dave for sticking up for us seniors, but... the most striking thing of this whole video is the INATTENTIVENESS OF THE REPRESENTATIVES!! THREE TIMES they had to be SHUSHED! Are they a bunch of school children who need to be kept quiet so the person who has the floor can even be heard?? Is in not their job to sit and listen to all the points of view to be able to weigh the best thing to do for their constituents? NO WONDER our Congress can do nothing right! THEY DON'T LISTEN!!

PrairieMan100, I'm thinking that as a child perhaps Dave didn't experience the poverty BECAUSE of the benefits from the government. He did not go hungry because of the government support. I think that was kind of the point. People are struck with low income sometimes through no fault of their own but low income doesn't have to hurt if we have efficient systems in place to help those in need before they even feel impoverished.

I am confused Dave. Who was it that raised you, your Mother or Grandmother. You keep saying that you grew up in poverty. I grew up with you all the way from Longfellow, to East Junior to East High. Never did you or look at our lack of money as a situation of being poverty. You and I never looked at Morningside at an urban area struck with poverty. I am disappointed that you have characterized our childhood days as such. I am sad for you.
