Lugar Urges Robust Security Engagement in Azerbaijan

Today Senator Dick Lugar (R-IN), Ranking Member for the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, urged robust engagement on security issues during a committee hearing to examine the nomination of Ambassador Richard Morningstar to be U.S. Ambassador to Azerbaijan.

Sharing his support of Ambassador Morningstar's nomination, Lugar urged continued commitment in combating weapons of mass destruction through cooperative work with Azerbaijan via the Nunn-Lugar program. Lugar and Morningstar also discussed the strategic imperative to open natural gas supply routes between the Caspian and Eastern Europe and Lugar articulated the need for continuing the Special Envoy for Eurasian Energy position being vacated by Ambassador Morningstar.
