Sen. Brown Announces New Resources To Improve Water Infrastructure In Jefferson County

Appalachian Regional Commission Grant Will Help Replace Water Distribution Lines and Improve Service for More Than 300 Households in Adena

WASHINGTON, D.C. – A Jefferson County community received new resources to update water infrastructure and improve service. U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) announced that the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) awarded a grant to the Village of Adena to rehabilitate several major components of a water treatment plant and a sewage pump station that will serve the entire village including for eight businesses, one school, and 331 households.

“Ohio’s rural communities and small towns face a heavy burden when financing infrastructure projects,” Brown said. “This improvement project will provide residents with a modern water system that improves water quality and encourages investment in the Village of Adena.”

The current water distribution system, dating back to the 1960s, is in poor condition and no longer operates effectively. The current system often floods, which damages the plant and halts operations. In addition to ARC’s $250,000 grant, state and local sources will provide an additional $1,929,575 to complete the renovation project.

Brown is working to help communities around Ohio struggling to afford costly but necessary renovations to sewer systems. Last year, he introduced the Clean Water Affordability Act to help communities make renovations to outdated sewer systems, while improving water quality and keeping rates affordable for residents and small business.
