Brown Applauds Groundbreaking Of Cedar-University RTA Station

$14.2 Million in Federal Funds, Including $10.5 Million TIGER Grant, Have Been Awarded to RTA to Support Station Reconstruction in University Circle

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) today applauded the groundbreaking of the new Cedar-University Rapid Transit Authority (RTA) station in Cleveland. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration provided $14.2 million in federal funds, including a $10.5 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant, to support the project. A member of Brown’s staff will attend the groundbreaking.

“Public transportation is critical for economic revitalization and job creation. Thanks to key federal investments, the new Cedar-University station will be able to serve more Ohioans as well as increase the value of the University Circle area for small business owners, young people, and homeowners,” Brown said. “Upgrades to the Rapid are an investment in the future of Cleveland.”

In May 2011, Brown announced a $2 million FTA award to reconstruct the rail station, bus terminal, and associated roadways so that they are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. They will also support the construction of a new rail entry plaza with a heavy-duty elevator to the rehabilitated train loading platform and waiting area.  In addition, a new bus terminal will be constructed on the north side of Cedar with a pedestrian connection between the bus terminal and rail station. The roadway of Cedar will be reconstructed to facilitate the relocated bus terminal and widened sidewalks. In October 2010, Brown also announced the $10.5 million TIGER grant  to upgrade and reconstruct the station.
