REP. NORM DICKS ANNOUNCES 2004 ACADEMY NOMINATIONS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Congressman Norm Dicks today announced his selection of the area high school students he will nominate to United States military academies for the upcoming academic year.

            The congressman annually recommends talented students for admission to the four academies based upon academic performance, personal motivation and their expression of genuine interest in a military career.   Rep. Dicks serves as a senior member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee in the House of Representatives, and has consistently encouraged young people to consider the advantages of an academy education.

            He emphasized "how important it is to continually bring the best and brightest members of the next generation into the leadership cadre of the U.S. armed forces."  Dicks added: "It's a great opportunity for these highly-motivated students who, in return for a first-class college education, continue on to become the leadership talent that sustains the world's most capable military force."

            Rep. Dicks noted that there is typically a high level of interest in an academy education among students in the 6th Congressional District, which is home to numerous defense installations and a large population of military veterans.    This year he has nominated students from Port Angeles, University Place, Bremerton, Tacoma, Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, Shelton, Sequim and Fircrest.

        The nominees for the classes entering the academies in the summer of 2004 are as follows (note that some students are nominated for more than one academy, and that hometown of record is listed):
