Unusual Facts
Although a select committee of the U.S. Senate cleared him of all charges, Samuel C. Pomeroy lost renomination to a third term in 1873, when several legislators accused him of bribing state assembly delegates for their votes in his previous elections to the Senate. Pomeroy served the remainder of his term, until March 3, 1873. Arthur Capper, who served for two consecutive terms as governor of Kansas, served five consecutive terms in the Senate. He was the first native-born Kansan to win election to either office.
