Brown-Supported Bill to Extend Middle-Class Tax Cuts Passes the Senate

Middle Class Tax Cut Act of 2012 Would Ensure 4.3 Million Ohio Families Will Save an Average of $1,400 on Taxes Next Year

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) applauded passage of the Middle Class Tax Cut Act, legislation to extend middle class tax cuts for the 99 percent of Ohio families making less than $250,000 per year. Under the bill, Ohio households would save an average of $1,400 on their taxes next year. The legislation—which passed by a vote of 51 to 48 today—would also extend the American Opportunity Tax Credit, the expanded Child Tax Credit, and the expanded Earned Income Tax Credit.

“Today, the Senate voted to extend tax cuts for 99 percent of Ohioans—the working families and middle class taxpayers who need tax relief the most,” Brown said. “We also reduced the deficit $829 billion by ending budget-busting tax cuts for the wealthiest two percent of Americans. Middle-class Ohioans have always worked hard and played by the rules—now it’s time that the wealthiest Americans paid their fair share too.”

The proposal would extend all tax cuts for individuals who make up to $200,000 and for married couples who make up to $250,000.  Those cuts are worth an average of $1,400 for 99 percent of Ohio families.  It would also extend other tax provisions critical to the middle class – the American Opportunity Tax Credit, the expanded Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit – that help families afford college, cover their bills, and provide for their children.

  • The American Opportunity Tax Credit helps middle-class families afford college by covering up to $2,500 of the cost of tuition.
  • The Child Tax Credit provides hard-working families with $1,000 worth of tax relief for each child under age 17.
  • The Earned Income Tax Credit is a refundable credit that offers assistance to working individuals and families who earned less than $49,078 in 2011.
