    Douglas Criscitello and Owen Barwell offer their take on government's role in private lending in today's Wall Street Journal. They write, "A recent case in point involves the risky loans made in the past decade by the Federal Housing Administration—and which are now showing higher than expected default rates. As a result, the FHA may need billions in government bailout funds."

    American History: On this day, 235 years ago, General Washington & his army entered Valley Forge, where an unusually harsh winter would be a great trial for the Continental Army. The suffering troops, held together by loyalty to the cause and loyalty to General Washington, emerged from the challenge stronger. A mere nine days later, these troops defeated the British at the Battle of Monmouth.

    Today is a great day in New Jersey's colonial history, "On this day in 1787, New Jersey became the third state to ratify the new U.S. Constitution and thereby join the Union, following Delaware and Pennsylvania. New Jersey had played a majo...r role in crafting the structure of the U.S. government after it became widely evident that the original Articles of Confederation were ill-suited to govern a unified nation."

    If nothing is done, the alternative minimum tax (AMT) will hammer many unsuspecting New Jersey families with a costly tax bill at the start of 2013. I wrote an op-ed that appeared in Roll Call about why Congress needs to fix the AMT immediately.

    I joined Sussex County Sheriff Mike Strada at the groudbreaking for the Sussex County Emergency Operations Center in Frankford this morning. This state of the art facility will help Sussex County’s first responders serve and protect the county for many years to come.

    God bless those who lost their lives 71 years ago today at the horrific attack on Pearl Harbor. Today’s Star-Ledger has a great story about a group of Pearl Harbor survivors in New Jersey that meet up every year to remember this day. Their story is truly inspiring.
