Congressional Art Contest

Click the image above for more information on the Congressional Art Contest.

Each year Members of Congress hold contests within their districts to choose winning pieces of art by high school students. Since this competition was created in 1982, hundreds of thousands of high school students have participated at the local level. The winning student from each district is invited to Washington, DC for the ribbon-cutting ceremony, and will have his or her artwork displayed in the U.S. Capitol for one year.

All submissions will be displayed at the Galleria Mall in Mt. Lebanon and each student’s artwork will be judged by local professional artists alongside submissions from other high schools.

The first place artwork will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol Complex for one year, and the student will be invited to participate in a ribbon-cutting ceremony in Washington, D.C.

To acknowledge the talents of the second and third place submissions, those pieces will be exhibited in Congressman Murphy's Mt. Lebanon office.

There will also be a People’s Choice Award that will hang in Congressman Murphy's Washington, D.C. office for one year.

The winners of Congressman Murphy's 2012 Congressional Art Competition are:

First Place: “Hands Study” by Elizabeth Nolin
Bethel Park High School, Bethel Park
Second Place:

“Lighter” by Kevin Saksa
Norwin High School, North Huntingdon

Third Place:  “Overcome as One” by Jennifer DeFazio
Keystone Oaks High School, Dormont

Ms. DeFazio also received the People’s Choice Award, which was selected and voted upon by event attendees.

Please note, while submissions can be original paintings, drawings, collage, prints, mixed media, computer generated art, or photography, students must also reside in the 18th Congressional district. The piece must be no larger than 28 inches by 28 inches, and no more than four inches in depth when framed. It must weigh less than 15 pounds.
