When info is lost from the chain of custody, it's lost forever. Even if it has been "recovered", that person's private info has been compromised forever because no one can definitively say whether an unauthorized party was actually able to access it or not. Q's: WHY are there not strict fed guidelines concerning the transport of private citizen's info? WHY are there not massive fines for that lost info? WHY are the private citizen's not properly compensated when that info is lost?

The other issue is that these types of breaches happen ALL THE TIME & the lost info is treated as no big deal by the company who lost it. To add insult to injury, the business who lost the info treats the person who owns the lost SSN, etc, MIGHT be lucky enough to receive a letter 3-4 weeks AFTER the event telling them to take out a fraud alert on their credit report, or if they are really lucky, the violating company might just offer to pay for a whole year of "free" credit reporting.

I love how Sheldon didn't answer exactly what the trans procedure is for this type of sensitive information and if Cal. Child Support violated this procedure. I find it impossible to believe that an acceptable trans procedure of 800,000 people's extremely sensitive info is to FEDEX it as if it's no more important than a Christmas gift to a relative.
