    About
  1. I’m deeply disappointed that the House leadership left town without a real solution to the so-called “fiscal cliff.” We should be coming together to make sure taxes don’t go up on most Americans, find savings, and stop the impending across-the-board cuts that will be devastating to our economy and safety net. I stand ready and willing to work with all of my colleagues.
  2. Regardless of where we stand on the so-called “fiscal cliff”, we all must recognize that now isn't the time for party politics — it is time to be a party to the discussion that will determine our way forward. See my op-ed in The Hill for some thoughts on how to reach a workable compromise.
  3. My thoughts are with the family of Senator Daniel K. Inouye and the people of Hawaii today. A war hero and outspoken voice for his constituents, Senator Inouye was a true leader and will be missed.
  4. There are no words to describe the horror in Newtown, Connecticut this morning. Schools should be a haven for children and families. No family should have to suffer the indescribable pain of losing a loved one—especially a young child—to such a terrible act of violence. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Newtown and to our entire national community who mourn along with them. We must begin a conversation now about how we can take concrete steps to end gun violence.
  5. Thank you to the first responders from around the Portland Metro area who did a remarkable job after the tragic shooting at Clackamas Town Center yesterday. As we mourn the victims, we can take some comfort in our strong community spirit.
  6. My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims of the senseless act of violence at Clackamas Town Center. We need more mental health care and fewer assault weapons.
  7. Today I discussed comprehensive immigration reform, education funding, and other issues with a group of students from Portland Community College. These future leaders are inspiring!

  8. The exposure of Oregon National Guard troops to toxic chemicals during their service in Iraq was appalling and inexcusable. Today Senator Ron Wyden, Congressman Kurt Schrader, and I stood with some of these brave soldiers to show our support for them and for legislation to stop contractors from avoiding liability and making taxpayers foot the bill.

  9. It was an honor to join Darlene Hooley and others to support the Hooley Scholarship Program for Oregon Veterans. These scholarships help veterans of the National Guard attend college after serving our state and country.
  10. Investing in early childhood education is essential to future economic growth and reducing poverty. Congratulations to the State of Oregon on the award of a $20 million grant for early childhood education programs. The award, from the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, will help Oregon continue its focus on early learning.
  11. Thousands of military retirees in Oregon may lose access to primary care doctors, pay higher health care costs, and face long trips to the doctor. Our veterans deserve better. Congressman Greg Walden and I have introduced bipartisan legislation to ease the impact of the changes on military retirees and send a message that we honor veterans and their families.
  12. Today I signed a petition calling for the Middle Class Tax Cut Act to be brought to the House floor for an up or down vote. Independent analyses show that automatic spending cuts combined with tax increases will likely undermine the economic recovery. We need to put aside differences and find a common sense compromise, which should include tax relief for most working families. What are your priorities for addressing the fiscal cliff?
  13. The Oregon Zoo is a leader in implementing high standards for the care and management of elephants in captivity. They recently welcomed a new baby elephant, and we can help name her! Vote for your favorite name at https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/WX7DPSG
  14. The Japanese government announced today that it will donate $5 million to the NOAA Marine Debris program to help cover costs for clean up and disposal of tsunami debris on the Pacific Coast. On behalf of the First District, I thank Japan fo...r this generous assistance. I will work with NOAA and state and local governments along the West Coast to ensure that this funding is used efficiently and effectively to mitigate environmental and safety impacts around the entire Pacific Rim.See More
  15. I'm glad to see Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum protecting consumers from debt settlement scams by using a bill I helped pass in the state legislature. Be wary of offers to settle your debts, and make sure the company is registered with the state.
