    Yesterday, I toured the OSU Hermiston Experiment Station with station director Phil Hamm to see first hand their work to provide quality research for farmers in Eastern Oregon.

    After the tour, I attended the memorial service for my good friend Mayor Bob Severson. Mayor Bob was a quiet giant in the community who spent his life serving and caring for others, especially the people of Hermiston.

    Mylene and I were horrified to learn of this senseless tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the children, teachers, and families. Our entire nation mourns this senseless loss. As parents, we know that there are no words to adequately express our sorrow at today’s horrific events.

    This is great news that the VA has so quickly agreed that veterans housing stipends should be based on where the veterans actually attend school, not where the school is headquartered. Veterans attending Oregon Tech will finally get the benefits they deserve when this needless red tape is cut away.

    As nations across the globe convene in Dubai to consider proposals for the UN to regulate the Internet, the House unanimously passed--with my strong support--a resolution supporting an unregulated internet. Click below to watch my speech in... support of the resolution.

    A hands-off regulatory policy has allowed the internet to to become the greatest vehicle for global social and economic liberty since the printing press and, despite the current economic climate, it continues to grow at an astonishing pace.     Today, I joined Rep. Suzanne Bonamici and Rep. Mark Amodei to introduce the TRICARE Protection Act to protect thousands of Oregon military retirees from changes to TRICARE Prime that will soon be implemented by the Pentagon.

    Thousands of O...regonians who have worn our nation’s uniform are at risk of losing access to their health care provider when the popular TRICARE Prime option is eliminated for many beneficiaries by the Pentagon. This could mean higher out-of-pocket costs and longer drives for many Oregon military retirees. These heroes have put their lives on the line for our freedom. They deserve the very best care our nation has to offer.

    Our common-sense, bipartisan proposal will require the Pentagon to report on the impact these changes will have on Oregon military retirees and their families, so they will know what is being planned. It also requires that the Pentagon guarantee that those affected retain access to a primary care doctor for two years to allow for a smooth transition under the switch.

    I’ll be holding a telephone townhall meeting this Thursday afternoon from 1:00-2:00 pm PST. I’ve gotten very positive feedback from people who enjoy listening to what others around our enormous district have to say, and the questions they a...sk. Some people prefer this way to communicate because it’s too difficult for them to attend the town halls I do in person. For others, the travel distance is too far, or they just aren’t comfortable in that kind of a setting.

    These telephone town halls are another effective way for me to hear from the people I work to represent in the Second District. All a person has to do is answer the phone and they’re automatically connected. Calls will begin going out just before 1:00 pm on Thursday inviting them to participate in the discussion.

    Tune is now to watch my Communications and Technology Subcommittee hold a hearing on effectively using spectrum.

    Spectrum is essential to jobs, technology, and the economy. The demand for spectrum, however, is quickly outpacing the usable... supply.

    I just got off the phone with Kent Connaughton, the Forest Service’s Regional Forester for Oregon. In September, I brought Kent to Lakeview to meet with landowners who suffered horrible losses of timber and livestock during the Barry Point fire. These landowners are very concerned with how the Forest Service fought the fire and are trying to figure out how to cope with the losses they’ve suffered....

    Kent gave me a status update tonight, and here is what I learned:

    1) The Forest Service is conducting an independent review of its own operations during the Barry Point fire. It is still in the works, but Kent believes it raises a number of unanswered questions, and he has asked for a more formal review by the states of Oregon and California. He will share a copy of the report once it is completed next month, and I look forward to getting to the bottom of these unanswered questions.

    2) Kent has sent a special team into the Fremont-Winema National Forest to ensure there is no disruption in timber supply due to the fires. The Forest Service has also announced it will make 30 million board feet of timber available for each of the next two years, double the current production.

    3) Kent also gave me an update on the Forest Service’s work with affected ranchers and landowners on recovery and repair to fences and property damaged during the fire. The Forest Service is putting $100,000 into the repair of fences destroyed during firefighting, and an additional $350,000 for materials to repair fences destroyed by the fire. Additionally, the Farm Services Administration is making $196,000 available to landowners for use in repairs.

    It is good news that this fire recovery work continues, but we need to see it through to the finish. I will continue to work with citizens recovering from these wildfire disasters and make sure that all levels of government are helping with recovery as quickly as possible.    See More
