Neugebauer Applauds Air Force Commitment to Much Needed Repairs to Dyess Air Force Base Runway

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Randy Neugebauer (TX-19) is pleased by a recent Air Force decision announcing that beginning in mid-September, Dyess Air Force base will finally receive the go-ahead to repair its runway infrastructure. This restoration will be performed by the 823rd Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron.

“This is fantastic for the future of Dyess Air Force base and the Abilene community,” Neugebauer said. “These repairs will continue to ensure that Dyess is at the forefront of military response in the Global War on Terror and it will continue to serve as a longtime component of our nation’s defense.”

While the main runway will be closed during the repairs, C-130’s will still be allowed to operate out of Dyess and new landing precautions will be in place to ensure the safety and crew of those within the Dyess community. In addition, to maintain readiness of the Dyess airmen, 20 B-1 bombers along with their crew will be temporarily transferred Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. This move is expected to save taxpayers approximately $15 million dollars, while still maintaining the rapid responsiveness of the Dyess airmen.

“I applaud the Air Force and the Department of Defense for moving forward with these critical repairs to the Dyess Air Force Base. Dyess has long been a vital asset to Abilene and more importantly has served this nation well as a critical part of our nation’s defense, both at home and abroad. Their motto ‘To provide world-class Airman and airpower to the warfighter’ perfectly summarizes the role of the Dyess airmen. I am thankful the Air Force has made this important commitment, solidifying Dyess Air Force Base’s presence in the West Texas to defend and protect America,” Neugebauer concluded.
