  1. I have strongly advocated that we renew the assault weapons ban, close the gun show loophole by requiring background checks for all gun purchases, prohibit on-line sales of firearms and ammunition, and ban large capacity magazines. We also need to engage in an honest national conversation that reveals and begins to repair the root causes of this senseless violence.
  2. As a nation, we grieve for the loss of so many innocent lives at the tragic school shooting in Newton, CT.

I send my sincere sympathies to the families of the victims.

Our prayers go out for the fallen, and for all who have been touched by this horrible violence.

May God strengthen and comfort them as they bear this awful burden.
  3. Well, they are at it again in Jefferson City.

Bills that would require a photo ID to vote in Missouri have already been pre-filed for the upcoming state legislative session in January.

Defending your Right to Vote is a constant battle that I will continue to fight.

This story, courtesy of the National Memo, outlines attempts to suppress your vote across the country.
  4. I wanted to share some remarkable new research from the Pew Research Center on avoiding the fiscal cliff with a common sense agreement, protecting the Middle Class and growing jobs.

President Obama and our Democratic leadership are seeki...ng a solution that cuts federal spending in a responsible way, increases revenue by asking the most fortunate to pay their fair share, and protects Medicare and Social Security. That is what the American people sent us here to do.See More
  5. 71 years ago today, on December 7, 1941, the Japanese Empire launched a surprise attack on U.S. Naval and Army Air Force installations at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

More than 2,400 Americans were killed and many more were wounded.

That "Day of Infamy" marked the United States' entry into World War II. From 1941 - 1945, more than 16 million Americans served in uniform.

Almost 400,000 were killed in ...action.

We give thanks for the courage of the greatest generation who defeated fascism and saved the world.

We salute them for their brave service and many sacrifices.

    Freedom is not free.

We will always remember Pearl Harbor.

  6. I will be honored to serve as the Dean of the Missouri U.S. House Delegation in the 113th Congress.
Thanks to Rob Koenig of the St. Louis Beacon for this excellent piece.
  7. Congresswoman Jo Ann Emerson announced today that she will retire from the U.S. House in February, 2013.

She has represented Southeast Missouri with honor and integrity.

Jo Ann has always been a voice of calm, reason and common sense.

She is a skilled legislator, a wonderful colleague, and a great friend of mine.

Congresswoman Emerson represents the best of Missouri.

I will miss her wise voice as Democrats and Republicans seek common ground to move the nation forward.
  8. 57 years ago today, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat and move to the back of the bus.

Her simple act of courage still inspires us as we continue the struggle for equality under the law for all.
  9. Tomorrow is World AIDS Day, a time to recommit ourselves to prevention, education, testing and better treatment.

    HIV/AIDS is a global pandemic.

According to the CDC, over 1.2 million Americans are living with this disease, and worldwide, more than 35 million people are infected.

Last year, over 2 million people died from HIV/AIDS.

In the United States, African Americans continue to represent a... disproportionately high percentage of newly infected patients.

HIV/AIDs is a completely preventable disease.

It requires education, personal responsibility and honesty about your status.

Let’s make sure that everyone who is sick gets access to the best treatment without delay.

And let’s work to bring about an AIDS-free generation.

  10. Some positive jobs numbers in the St. Louis region for October, but we still have a long way to go to get everyone back to work.
  11. Great news from my friends at PROMO.

The march for full rights and equal protection under the law moves forward, and this time, St. Louis is tied for 1st place!

St. Louis Earns Perfect Score in LGBT Equality Survey

Just as St. Louis County considers Bill 279 tonight which would sexual orientation and gender identity to the county's anti-descrimination law, a new survey shows that St. Louis C...ity is one of 11 cities nationally receiving a perfect score of 100 on the Municipal Equality Index (MEI), the first ever rating system of LGBT inclusion in municipal law.

The MEI rates cities based on 47 criteria falling under six broad categories:
