ENGEL ANNOUNCES GRANTS FOR NATHAN KLINE INSTITUTE

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Eliot Engel announced two grants are being awarded to the Nathan S. Kline Institute in Orangeburg, one to study alcohol-induced brain damage, and the second to hire a student and/or teacher to conduct research over the next two summers.

Rep. Engel said, “These two grants from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, through the National Institutes of Health (NIH), total $430,030. The larger grant of $370,192 will be used to examine the mechanisms of alcohol induced brain damage, with the hope that it will lead to new therapies for fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.”

The second grant, of $59,838, will be used to hire a student and/or teacher to carry out research over the next two summers. It is part of $33 million in grants allocated from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to fund research for over 3,700 high school and college students and science teachers at NIH-funded laboratories across the country.

“Fetal alcohol syndrome has a devastating and life long effect on infants and this research may help us to avoid the difficulties this disease causes. Research is the path to the future and the $33 million will pay us in dividends in ways we do not yet suspect.”
