STATEMENT BY CHAIRMAN ENGEL ON DECISION TO LIFT THE SUSPENSION OF CUBA FROM THE ORGANIZATION OF AMERICAN STATES (OAS)

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Eliot L. Engel – the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere – issued the following statement regarding today’s decision at the Organization of American States General Assembly meeting in San Pedro Sula, Honduras to lift the organization’s suspension of Cuba:

“Today, the Organization of American States (OAS) lifted its suspension of Cuba. Let us be clear that this does not mean that Cuba has been readmitted to the OAS. The ball is now in Cuba’s court to abide by the principles of human rights and democracy embodied in the Inter-American Democratic Charter.”
