Washington, DC--Congressman Eliot Engel (D-NY-17) issued the following statement in support of the Senate confirmation of Elena Kagan to be the next Supreme Court Justice of the United States. 

“I am proud to see a fellow New Yorker reach the pinnacle of the legal profession.  As an American, I am also very pleased to see someone elevated to our highest court who possesses a great understanding of the law. 

“Last year, I co-sponsored legislation honoring Justice Louis Brandeis, the first Jewish Justice on the Supreme Court.  Justice Brandeis was influential in countless court cases and was a passionate voice in supporting freedom of speech and the right to privacy.  His is a powerful legacy for any Justice to follow.  I am certain Justice Kagan will live up to, and add to, that legacy

“This is a superb day for women, for New York City and for the United States of America.  In the wake of the outrageous Citizens United case which destroyed 100 years of precedent, and made corporations a dominant player in our political system, we need thoughtful judges like Justice Kagan who will evaluate cases on merit and not be blinded by their political ideologies.”
