ENGEL ANNOUNCES FUNDING FOR ROCKLAND COUNTY SEWER DISTRICT

Washington, D.C.--Congressman Eliot Engel has secured funding for a preliminary appropriations project of $500,000 for the Rockland County Sewer District No. 1. This project is part of the FY 2010 Interior Subcommittee Appropriations bill.

“This funding would greatly aid the Rockland County Sewer District in replacing failing septic systems and in upgrading the aging treatment plants which if not treated could result in the pollution of the water supply for over one million people,” said Rep. Engel. “I am pleased to do my part in helping the people of Rockland protect their natural resources and preserve their essential water supply.”

Funding will be used for the continued construction of an advanced wastewater treatment plant, four pump stations, and maintenance of the existing sewer and septic systems. This action was a preliminary step in a long process. The bill will now be considered by the full House Appropriations Committee, and then the full House. The Senate is also working on their version of the bill.

Vice Chairman of the Rockland County Sewer Commission Christopher P. St. Lawrence said, “The Western Ramapo Sewer Project is one of the most important and innovative projects in the New York Metropolitan area. It will protect the Ramapo River and enhance the health and welfare of the citizens of Hillburn and Sloatsburg. Congressman Engel deserves to be congratulated for his assistance in this endeavor.”

Rep. Engel added, “While this is only the beginning of the Appropriations process, I feel very good that funding for this important program was included in this measure. I will continue working with my colleagues to ensure this funding is preserved as the bill moves through the legislative process.”
